I have watched every moment that Saric has played in these Olympics. Honestly if he didn't have the contract and the draft pick status he would not make the team. I like the guy, he is going to be a fan favorite, but he is a couple years away.
He has incredible energy. He is a big energizer bunny out there. He is a good positional rebounder, he doesn't have the athleticism to be a good rebounder, but makes up for that with technique and effort. He seems to have a very high basketball IQ, he is an elite passer for his position, he would have a ton of assists on the Croatia team if his teammates were better. He handles the ball well.
Now the bad. While his effort on defense is high (actually too high, he tries to help too often) he is going to be fodder with the more athletic NBA players. He is going to be a target until he learns to position himself better. He will probably never be more than an average defender, although his court presence and Basketball IQ may prove me wrong.
His offensive game is somewhat the same. Tons of effort, but mostly what he does is set picks and try to get low post position. He will not be a low post threat in the NBA. When he moves on offense and seeks the ball he is mostly successful getting the pass and finding an open teammate, he does finish when it is appropriate. He did not do that often enough, but that may have been by (foolish) design by the Croatia coach. He does seem to draw fouls easily. He is the best player on his team, by a wide margin, but he may not be able to create his own shot in the NBA.
In crunch time against Argentina he tried to take over the game in the last half of the 4th quarter and made some nice plays, but his teammates were a hinderance as they just are not very good.
He may turn in to a quality NBA player, there is much to like, but he is going to need a couple seasons at least before he catches up to the speed of the NBA game in my opinion. Fans are going to love his energy and tenacity. If we ever get a good point guard he may turn into a Kurt Rambis type with more soft skills (passing, ball handling) but less physical strength.
