You know, I just got this ill feeling that tomorrow is going to make the Sixers 1986 draft look good in comparison.

Why?

We're getting the best player in the draft and I'm not sure its particularly close...

The horrid trades in 86, I still can't believe it to this day. I'm just bringing this up because if it happened once it could happen again. I believe BColangelo wants to make his mark on this team and that makes him dangerous. I'd feel much better if Hinkie was still running the show.

If they draft Simmons and move two picks to get a higher draft choice, I'll be fine with it. I do share some fear but with Teague and now Rose traded my anxiety is way lower.

AI was a great pick, but Kobe was the best player in that draft. Unlike AI, Simmons is not a feared scorer/player. He couldn't even lift his team into the March Madness.

I'd pick Simmons, package #24 and #26 to move up for the best G pick I can get and then focus on getting a firm commitment from Saric for this season and keeping Embiid on track to play.

There is no rush at all IMO to trade Okafor or Noel especially when we have no idea if Embiid will be able to play 5 games much less a season. Continue to work on developing their games along with everyone else and use the season to evaluate who is expendable and who is core.

Hopefully, BC will be patient, keep the picks for next year's draft which is supposed to be quite good and let things develop naturally. If the Celtics or some other team want Okafor badly enough, then ask for the moon and rake them over the coals to get him. He posted 17 & 7 in the NBA as a 19 year old! Yes, he has things to work on as every player does, but that type of talent is not common.

Rumors from Celtic's fans are that they are pushing for Noel instead of Okafor on any trade surrounding the #3 pick.

Some other interesting ideas that may also help fix the incentives and eliminate tanking:

Mandate players play longer in college than 1 year or increase the age of entering the NBA

Develop a true minor league system outside of college (which needs to get out of the sports business anyway and get back to their real mission: educating our kids). Maybe create NBDL teams for every NBA team and give the team options for keeping players in development or having them on the NBA roster right away.

Increase roster size to 18 and create an injured list that doesn't count against the game day roster

Expand the draft so the teams can fill their minor league teams

A solution for keeping some players in college would be to have a minimum age limit for free agency. If a player could not become a free agent till age 25 there is less incentive for some players to start their clock earlier. Players could still go to the NBA early but their earnings would be limited in the way draft pick earnings are limited today.

The whole structure of the NBA salary cap is set up to encourage dynasties rather than competitive balance. Given the very finite number of blue chip and even relatively good players vs the length of the first round, it is clear to me that the NBA has too many teams to be able to reasonably achieve competitive balance or to not have a strong incentive to tank in the draft. When you have a draft in which the second round is viewed as rather meaningless, it's clear that your draft is a hugely different draft than that of the other major sports. The NBA, I think to a greater extent than other sports, refs to benefit the stars. If you're Michael Jordan, it is virtually impossible to walk with the ball, regardless of whether or not you prefer to actually dribble.

I remember the days when the NBA had a territorial draft. That's how we got Chamberlain.

If the Sixers get the 3rd pick by trading either Noel or Okafor do they take the point guard (Dunn), or the shooting guard (Murray)? I'd lean towards Murray, he's a pure shooter and scorer. Dunn is the better defender and is a couple years older, not as gifted a scorer as Murray but a guy who can be trusted with the ball and distribute.

I keep Okafor, he is worth more than either of those players. Noel is likely too, but I could be convinced if it was #3 + something else.

BC seems fixated on need or making a "splash". I think taking BPA and letting my roster make the splash for me on the court is best. Take Simmons and go from tthere. No rush to do anything else unless another team wants to overpay IMO.

If Simmons can develop an outside shot, the comparison to Lebron isnt really that crazy.

Tanking to me means deliberately losing games to get a higher draft pick. Rebuilding means shedding older players and losing because you are just a bad team. The only way to build a winner is to completely rebuild and start from the ground up because you need those precious high draft picks to get real stars, unless you can buy them. When you trade away what talent you have, you get cap room to take on really bad contracts for draft picks and get the benefit of losing even more. The worst thing of all is to hover around as the #7 or 8 playoff team or just miss the playoffs. Really impossible to get better in that situation.

WAY too much. Noel alone is worth the #3. This would be a bad trade. Celts have always done well with a very good defensive center. They want Noel. Now they are just de-pantsing the Colangelos.
