You have to pay the price to keep the Stars from matching. Or to force the trade. And I suspect Flyers would rather give up those picks than two players, who would either have to come off the NHL roster or a be top youngster (or both).

Guess Flyers didn't want him that badly but they also couldn't make that deal. Two second-round picks but Dallas also dumped $3.25M by adding in a guy the Flyers couldn't possibly want/use (Lyubushkin).

At some point the radio loving fanbase is going to start getting louder...it feels to me that for that deal to be made the Flyers didn't have an interest since they could have offered a better package.

Stars were desperate to shed the salary to keep Robertson. Flyers would have had to pretty much give up a first and two seconds (or a player as good as a first) to keep Lyubushkin out of the deal. And taking him probably even worse, costing them leverage in any possible Risto trade.

They could have bought out or buried Lybushkin, it's only 1 year and they have cap room.
But Briere might not want to tie himself up until he knows if he can sign Carlsson, etc.
Or they didn't think Bourque was an upgrade over Barkey at center.

Rumor is they're looking at bringing back Giroux.
On a 1-2 year deal he'd help the PP, could play with Couts and is still effective, especially if you limit his minutes.

Plus, he should finish his career here.

Out of curiosity...what would his comparison to Barkey have do with anything when you need multiple people at the positon?

Honestly...if that was his reasoning then he might not be a good GM.

If Zegras and Barkey both play C the Flyers would actually have enough, if not too many, Cs. They also still have too many Top 9 wingers (if they brought in Giroux, for instance). But had they traded for Bourque a player probably would have been in the deal.

Vladar extended 5 yrs for 27.5M - as noted here and in media reports, it will be 5.5M per year.

The problem would be term on a new contract for Bourque.
Zegras, Dvorak, Cates, Barkey, Bourque.
Jett and Knuble in LHV.
Nesbitt a year away, same with Berglund.
So Danny might feel Bourque wasn't enough of an upgrade over what he already had.

They added Acciari, RH C who's probably more of a RW these days.
2x2.8M. So replacement for Hathaway, not as fast but more skilled.
Could play 4C, depening on how the top 9 shakes out.
But Couts/Acciari pretty slow pair, you want someone faster on that line.

Again...nothing you typed about players years away changes my question...the fact some players MIGHT be a year away is a silly way to run a team.

Nesbitt hasn't done anything to prove he's "a year away".

Exactly, in that role he is fine. Hopefully, Couts will still be the 4th line C and Acciari can rotate with Grebenkin & Grundstrom on that line. It would be good to have a more balanced 4th line with skill as well.
