I get how Walters could hold up Dawson signing. I do not get how Dawson could hold up Walters signing. I agree with fish above that I do NOT think its likely that the Phillies would give Walters more money if Dawson does not sign. Why does he get it and Gilley or Gonzalez or any other college guy not get it? That sends all the wrong incentives to future college picks of the Phillies to be the last to sign.

Walters is likely meaningless in the equation. Maybe he is hoping for a larger bonus if Dawson does not sign, but it is really up to Dawson to accept the offer. Agree that Walters will likely NOT get a larger offer because of the precedent, but there is probably no harm in waiting a few days (deadline on the 28th).

This is all about Dawson and always has been.

Was Dawson pretty much a late-round flyer whom most expected would go to college but the Phillies being his hometown team has given them a chance?

They have saved a chunk of their signing pool for Dawson regardless of what the Walters bonus was - so the Phillies clearly wanted and thought he would sign. I am guessing he will. Those quotes from Phillies sources saying they expected to sign 19 of their 20 picks were not wrong. The kid is human of course. Maybe he changed his mind.

It is Florida (where the UDFAs signed), not sure why. It could be he goes to Miami and was there or there was a delay and everyone went to Florida already.

On Dawson they have the money, but he falls into the large group of HS players that want more money than there is to go around, some get picked and signed, others don’t.

Yeah CBP was tagged in the last IG signing pic that was posted here but that was several days ago, and that room looked different, and shabbier.

I remember one year the logos of the affiliates hadn't even updated yet [still said Lakewood, I think].

So I do NOT know what to make of the MLB.com draft database. It has Phillies 8th Round Pick Brian Walters, a college senior, getting an OVERSLOT bonus of $309,400 (slot was only $215,100). Does that make sense to anyone? If that's not a typo then Dawson is going to BC.

Could be real. Looks like Walters redshirted after 2 games in 2023 so he was a redshirt junior this season rather than a senior. The Phillies also might have increased the offer if Dawson was unsignable, something we speculated on. I guess setting a bad precedent was secondary to getting a happy Walters in camp.

One more take on the Phillies draft. Generally positive on who they got relative to slot and bonuses. Notes Ferrara is really young which could mean more power but also probably not a long term SS.

It would seem so. He was a 2021 high school graduate. Spent the 2022 year/season at Eastern Florida State College, then transferred to Miami. Redshirted in 2023. He has/had a year of college eligibility left - we (and the Phillies?) were misled by MLB's listing him as a "senior," which he was, academically, but with eligibility remaining.

I can't imagine the Phillies expect (or expected) to sign Logan Dawson away from BC with $240,000. Maybe they will, but I think not. Between NIL money, and just his desire to go to BC... that's not life-changing money. (Keep in mind, after taxes - he lives in New Jersey! - and after whatever his representatives get, it's not $240k any more.) For that amount, the kid's better off at BC, and he could be looking at something much more attractive in three years.

I think we're done (pending any additional UDFAs).

For whatever it's worth, Steve Potter still expects Logan Dawson to sign.

7/25/25 : Clearwater Complex PDC (Player Development Center) activities

All but 16th round pick SS Logan Dawson and 20th round pick Landon Schaefer have signed to date however Dawson will be signing his contract in the near future.

I hope Steve knows something!

BA now shows the same Walters bonus as MLB. So far, none of the Twitter/Bluesky minor league guys (Callis, Mayo, Collazo) has individually reported the signing. It would be interesting to see what they might say.
