There are certainly still scenarios where they are just as good without Embiid. There are also scenarios where the Knicks just consistently play better (and harder) than us, regardless. The Celtics had more talent but not that.

Ooh, that’s backwards...unless they want the new GM to make the coaching hire. As I’ve written elsewhere, I have no confidence in the Sixers ability to come out of this with a better guy at the top.

I think "for now' is the key, unless Nurse somehow has Harris and Blitzer in his corner. In which case it probably is Brand, and nothing truly changes (compared to last year or before Morey). Otherwise, yeah, surely the new guy gets to make his hire.

They're going nowhere next year anyway, the new guy's job should be to move George and marginalize Joel (if not trade him) to start the new era.

I have no one I wanted. I don’t know enough about Brand and how he would operate as a GM now. Who is a creative, knowledgeable guy that’s next in line for a GM position? I mean, I like Brand as a person, and I actually would have been OK with Morey if he ever came across as more invested in the team. Going to miss him on draft night I’m afraid.

Maybe the next GM hire should be handled by Elton Brand...smart dude, good contacts. I wonder if both Morey and Nurse are past their “best by” dates--good once, but have not adjusted to the league.

Okay, you didn't say he should be the GM but he already is the GM, if he made the hire he would be replacing Morey as PBO.

I was gonna say, the problem is you can't trust the owners, but you can trust Bob Myers some.

I think my idea was sort of dumb, not a lot of people get to hire their boss. I’d take about 1/2 the posters on this board making the final decisions with the right support staff. I’m terrified of Nurse permanently ruining Maxey, but allegedly Tyrese loves him, so that at least is positive.

It seems to me this a test of the organization, much like we've seen for the Phillies and the Flyers. Both of those teams embraced change, but not that much change. Brand, Jameer, Ned Cohen, even Tony Dileo Jr. - they could move up, they could move out, or there could be change at the top but not much change otherwise.

The coverage seems to suggest Nurse will coach the team next year. Bet they don't want to eat both salaries. But also not that unusual, if inevitably short-lived (Briere keeping Torts, Klentak extending Mackanin, Morey inheriting Doc).

And Myers is is running the show until he makes a hire. That could include the draft though obviously he'd be using the existing work done under Morey already.

Good move to get rid of Morey. Like others, I do not trust Harris or anyone else in the front office to make the right moves, but they need to trade Embiid and George and bring in a better head coach that can run the team around Maxey & VJ. This era is over and needs to be put put of its misery.

Sure, the Sixers should trade Joel and George just like the Phillies should have traded Castellanos and Bohm, and should trade Nola. It's a nice idea, and the players in this case are much, much better, but at least in Joel's case, almost impossible to move given the length, $ and his probably availability. You'd either be taking back so much crap to salary-match or would actually have to give up draft picks with him to not get crap.

PG might be more moveable, and they can probably cobble together role players with his cap number if they aren't forced to use it on someone else's equally high-paid problem. But don't see how they can really build a deeper, better team for at least a couple of years. Maxey already seems sentenced to either two years of tanking or two years of a team with the same ceiling (second-round loss). And probably won't have the same coach during that period either.

Myers would be a good guy to lead a real search, but I suspect the Sixers will do a sham search and promote Elton Brand. Brand is a good guy, maybe he would be better the second time around.

He was very thorough and involved with the Commanders. And the Devils just made a huge change at GM too. So there might be hope. What's the point of even having a guy like that as your sports group president if he's just gonna do the same stuff ownership was doing without one?

Wonder if the CEO, Tad Brown, who had a long history with Morey in Houston, is sticking around.

Things can always change but I assume he would not have taken his current job (versus just being an advisor) if he really wanted to run a basketball team hands-on again when he gets to run an NHL and NBA team and a soccer team and a NASCAR team (technically the Commanders are separate from HBSE but he's still available to Harris for that too). Would theoretically be a pay cut!

You would think he'd still have to be involved given how much he knows about the NBA, but it doesn't seem like Theo Epstein has any day-to-day input into the Red Sox these days (and they could probably use him). Theo has an ownership share in Fenway Sports too, that might be Myers' end game.
