Pretty sure Heredia has made some top 30s previously. Marquez a new name rising (though Villoria might have been in the same prospect range too). Hettiger has quietly improved a bit. Now fighting with Ferrebus and Ricketts for the title of best catching prospect.

I don't believe so. He is really close though, I have him at like 42 service days and 45 is the mark for eligibility.

It just seems like MLB Pipeline left him out either on purpose or by accident. Maybe they weren't anticipating the option as they finished the list. He was #11 for the Orioles last year.

Feel like AOA omission is a mistake

MLB tends to insert draftees and newly traded prospects rather than spend the time to re-rank the whole list properly. Hard to think Spikerman is even close to AOA as a prospect these days and AOA still has lots of projection to figure out.

More his inconsistency - but I’d still put way more value on him over Ricketts or Hettiger who seem doubtful to ever have any real value.

McGarry will not yet be at 6th year free agent level this offseason. Unless they cut him, he'll still be in the organization next year. No one took him in the Rule 5 last year. Interestingly, they moved him back to being a starter this year. At this point, one can argue that he should have bought a house in the Reading area. He's been there for parts of the last four seasons. That's longer than Luis Garcia the SS was at Lakewood (parts of three straight seasons, interrupted by COVID).

I think it's more likely that a pitcher with good command/control learns a new pitch/modifies existing pitch (changeup, sweeper) and breaks out than a high velocity prospect with poor command suddenly develops better mechanics in his mid-20s. McGarry, Baker, et al., all seem to have flamed out in AA, probably b/c at that level hitters can handle FBs over the plate and they can't hit spots or get their breaking ball over consistently.

It's probably innate body control, maybe it's harder to scout, but doesn't look like something that can be coached up..

In this particular case I think there are a couple of things going on.

• There is a track record of Griff McGarry struggling and this looks like those struggles (which is very fair)
• There is a lack of looking at changes made by Griff this year, to the point about modifying pitches, there are changes to his delivery and pitch shape that have made his pitches better
• A lack of clear direction about what his role is give he is much more comfortable as a starter but looks like a reliever

I don't know if McGarry is a top 30 prospect because I don't know if he can get to that next level of command, but also at the same point, Griff McGarry is a better and different pitcher today than he was 12 months ago.

At what point do you think he becomes at the minimum a bullpen option? Where would he need to get?

Obviously 11 was too high [or similarly outdated] last year but still a big fall. I suppose being passed up in the Rule 5 also says to the people who make these lists that he isn't valued around the league. Seems to me the bigger question is does he get protected this time... or taken if not.
