Well, we need news media.
We pretty evidently do not need 24/7 news channels on cable TV. There simply isn't enough real news to fill all that air time... so instead, we get opinion, entertainment, disinformation masquerading as news. We can argue about which of these outlets are more accurate, which are more manipulative, etc., but the problem is that there's so much air time that has to be filled up that all of them overhype stories, make things up, create instead of report the news, etc.
This is a pretty good point, IMHO. A federal District Judge's ruling ought to apply in his district. If appealed, the Appellate Court ruling ought to apply in the Appellate region. If appealed to the Supreme Court, their ruling would apply nationally. If different districts or appellate regions rule differently, the issue should rise more-or-less automatically to the Supreme Court.
We could separately debate how we assure that the Supreme Court does not get captured by a political faction (and how we actually demand an obtain ethical non-partisan behavior by Supreme Court justices).
