This would suggest that a 25th-man caliber outfielder isn't as easy to find as people think, or that nearly all the teams in baseball just value light-hitting defensive utility guys. While Michael Bourn can't find a job.

I'm a little late with this one but while attending the game this past Saturday evening, none other than J.C. Ramirez pitched out of the bullpen for the Reds. Meanwhile, Philippe Aumont is on the 7 day DL for the White Sox AAA team in Charlotte while Tyson Gillies is out of affiliated baseball, playing for Sugar Land in the Atlantic League.

Ryan Madson on in the ninth for the A's to try to save a win over the Rangers. He starts with two outs, a K and a pop up. Odor then singles and Desmond homers. Madson gets blown save and "saves" Cole Hamels from a loss tonight. Game now 5-4 Rangers going to the bottom of the ninth.

UPDATE: Ranger closer Tolleson starts the bottom of the ninth with a single and a double to put runners on second and third and no out. Next batter pops up for first out. An IBB loads the bases, still one out. Next hitter flies to right, but runners hold. Two out. Then Khris Davis hits a 2-2 pitch for a grand slam walk off win for Oakland.

So both closers get a blown save in the ninth, but one also gets a win while the other gets a loss. I guess this is why the closer role is considered as important as it is in baseball today. Tolleson needed one strike to get a great save and be a hero, but ended up the goat with blown save and loss. There is a ton of pressure pitching the ninth inning.

Unless it's for love of the game, I doubt Victorino would sign for a team that isn't likely headed to the Postseason. It may be the end of the road for the Flyin' Hawaiian. I wouldn't mind the Phillies giving him an open invitation to sign one of those ceremonial one-day minor league contracts to allow him to retire as a Phillie though he seemed to have really bonded with Boston as well in 2013.

I am sure Giles will at some point be a very good relief pitcher for the Astros. Meanwhile, barring what the other Arauz does, it wouldn't surprise me if Velazquez is what we get out of that deal in the end. Appel is a mess and now may be hurt. Eschelman has amazing control but not much else. Oberholzer is filler. Even so, considering that #2-3 starters have more value than closers, we win that deal.
