The one for one comparison really doesn't matter. It's more that all these waiver losses and practice squad guys are somewhat fungible. It's certainly possible Howie lost someone he didn't expect to, given the Eagles set a record for most players claimed. Though that's also a tribute to the team's success.
At the end of the day it still comes back to, Howie thinks Dalton is worth keeping, whether as a player or a trade chip, more than Cameron Williams, and many fans and writers disagree. Their opinion doesn't matter and neither does mine. I'm more interested in why these things happen, which seems pretty clear for now.
And there's no doubt Howie would have preferred to put a QB on the PS. But Payton would have been claimed and Dalton would have refused. He obviously feels burned by not being able to have more patience with McCord, and is also obviously worried he doesn't have a back-up QB who could actually beat the Commanders in 12 days, if the worst-case scenario were to happen.
