Dalton's last pro bowl season was 2016, 10 years ago.

He was never that good to begin with and certainly is not good now.

It was a roll of the dice by Roseman that appears to have come up snake eyes so far. Why he cannot admit that should tell us what he truly feels about McKee which is not surprising since McKee has not been good either.

Dalton is the new Josh McCown, and we saw how that went when McCown actually had to play. You can use a roster spot on a third-string QB who's really a coach, especially if Payton can actually contribute on special teams. The question is will McKee work out in the new offense (maybe) or be good enough if Hurts goes down (probably not, but few teams actually have a back-up QB that good. We just have a skewed perspective on that from 2017).

Yes, I know. Howie is a terrible gambler. Two questions for you:

Do you actually think that Dalton was added to this team because Howie thought he could “Foles it” if Jalen got hurt?
And how high were you on McKee last year?

BTW - when Dalton played in the Pro Bowl is immaterial. If you think it’s relevant, you clearly miss my point.

Both Hinton and Williams were reported as claimed off waivers - Williams by ATL and Hinton by Cincy. Also Gushiken claimed by Indy and Latu claimed by Pats.

Agreed. And, yes, the fact that Payton can fill roles on STs is pretty big, but largely ignored by many. As I posted above, it gives the Eagles flexibility to keep a player they otherwise wouldn’t have (like an extra QB who doubles as a coach).

I don’t think Hinton was going to make the PS, but Williams was. Seems the Eagles replaced him with another tackle who was a 3rd round pick a couple years ago.

Latu claimed - Jenkins outplayed him in camp and can block. Gushiken claimed - likely came down to him vs. Ringo (they were using him at gunner) and Ringo came on strong late. He’s always had some traits that work (and some that can be exposed), and he’s an elite ST player. As you get older, you get smarter and may learn tricks to compensate for what you lack - maybe this applies to Ringo.

No, I think Dalton was added to the team to push McKee and provide Roseman with a trade chip that would land us another draft pick.

And how high were you on McKee last year?

Not very, I've never thought McKee was anything but a backup QB at this level and I'm not surprised that Roseman has not extended him or appears very worried about replacing him with Payton as the next young & cheap draft pick QB on the roster. I expect McKee is gone after this season.

The only way I see him retained is if Hurts performs badly this season, McKee improves in the scheme during the season and Payton does not show enough to take his role.

I must have missed it then because the fact Dalton has not been a productive or effective QB since 2016 is pretty clear.

He has played for 5 different teams (6 now if he sticks with the Eagles) over those 10 years and 4 of those teams since 2020. Every season from 2020 to 2023 was a one and done for Dalton which tells me those teams did not think much of him either. The last three has been with Carolina which is a bad team and known as a bad organization for evaluating talent.

Dalton has won 28 games out of 48 chances over the 10 years; 1 in the last 3 years out of 6 chances. Some of that is he is on bad teams, but that is where bad QB tend to end up because good teams already have good QB or know how to evaluate what is a good and bad QB.

Pretty simple IMO. Roseman rolled the dice to get vet competition for McKee and possibly a trade chip for Roseman to cash in, but it has not worked yet and likely never will.

I don't think that's really it though. A little competition, and the possibility of a trade. But Dalton was mostly brought in because of his experience in a similar offense, which neither McKee nor Hurts have. He wasn't going to necessarily be better than McKee, but also not worse. He's here to be part of the QB room and be a communications conduit for the new OC.

Neither is sufficient if you're trying to win without Hurts. But Mariota and PIckett weren't really either (although both of those guys could more easily take over the offense, stylistically, at the time).

McKee's the one they hoped to trade, should he have had a bit more value. Neither of them showed much in the games, albeit in largely meaningless or less-than-ideal situations and neither of them have more value than what the Eagles gave up for them in the first place (in Dalton's case, a 7th rounder, three of which the Eagles burned yesterday).

I can still see them keeping Dalton and throwing McKee into a deal for another QB entirely, or scrambling to get one if things go bad before the trade deadline. But if nothing changes and Dalton isn't traded or released my guess is that also means he is the one who gets the reps as QB2. The competition didn't really do either QB any favors IMO (not enough meaningful practice or playing time for either, where just one back-up would have gotten plenty).

It would be a huge error to have the 38 yr old, Dalton, as the backup QB.

McKee can still improve in the scheme and become more productive as can Payton. Stupid to carry a scrub vet who would be available if you cut him and needed him back later anyway.

Then hire him as a coach or a consultant and let him work in the QB room. He's undeserving of a roster spot, by which I mean he taking a spot from someone who actually had some value.

But clearly Howie Roseman doesn't just see him as a coach and thinks he deserves a roster spot, nor did it seem the Eagles really lost anybody they wanted to keep. But hey, what does Howie know, he cut Kyle McCord who is now the Dolphins QB2!

If Dalton is actually the third or fourth-string QB I agree it's a stretch, which is why I don't necessarily think he is.

If the GMs that trade with him believe what he says they'll give up a 6th for Dalton!

We'll see. My personal prediction is still more to think the back-up QB does not currently play for the Eagles. But I also think if Mannion wants Dalton instead of McKee, he gets him.

And saying "just him be a coach," as A town does, misses the fact that a veteran QB can have a completely different impact on the other players that an actual coach never could. We'll see if that's what the Eagles really want too I guess. What's clear is they don't want to lose Payton.

I don't see it, but I don't even know what the offense is as they haven't done anything in the preseason to suggest anything. It almost seemed like an OL interview.

Why give anything away in the preseason, especially since it won't even be the starters trying to mesh with the new O-design. We'll have to hope they got it down in meetings and closed practices. With all teams sitting most of starters for most of pre-season and Eagles not being the only team making changes, a lot of teams will be groping to pull it all together in the early games.

After watching college football the last couple of years, the one thing that sticks out to me is the lack of QBs that can go on to the pros and succeed. There are two or so each year that can play on Sunday. The rest just don’t have the skills.

I don't think it's about it being some kind of of magical new offense with never-before-seen formations. It's just going to be different from last year, and also more similiar (at least in part) to what Shanahan and McVay have done. Which is what Dalton's used to.

But much more important is what Hurts does in it! .

I agree about it with regards the upcoming season, but it's not like any QBs showed anything if you are trying to trade one of them.
