I was watching both games last night, so not fully paying attention, but Daulton didn't look like good including missing Stowers a few times.

once you get the IPP program player through to the 53 man roster I believe you cn move him to thepraactice squad and he can’t be poached. I’ll check. Ok, three viable options. I’m ot going to consider short-term IR because it doesn’t make sense.

1. Keep him on the 53 all year. He’s as safe a Jalen Hurts or Jordan David if he’s there.

2. Waive him at cut down while other teams are scrambling for roster spots. If he clears in 24 hours, move him to the 17th PS spot and he \’s safe for the year if he gets there. IPP17’s can’t be poached.

3. Get him through by putting him on the 53, then IR him of the season and replace him with a vested veteran they cut. He’s safe for the season but can’t play this year after the IR nd he still needs a 53 slot at cut-down.

4. Put someone who has a minor injury (sore hamstring, whatever) on the Designated to return IR (there are two of those slots) and bring that player back in a month and give Bernard the “open” spot. But they would still have to waive him to get him to the safe PS17 spot, and waivers are easier at cut-down. Ot they could juggle people on and off the IR-return list, but they only have 8 for he whole year. 2 at cut-down. Or they could IR Bernard after week 1 any time and eep him but he can’t play.

I think the Rams screwed up this process with Willie Lampkin last summer and lost him because they didn’t want to use a 53 slot on him.

And Dalton sucks. Signing him was really a stupid move. And who knows what they see in Stowers. they need another tight end who can play inline.

Robinson looks like he can play all of a sudden. Wonder if Fangio’s 'life support 'comments were told to him before the public.

Dalton's getting out-played in the games, but it doesn't seem like it was a dumb move to have the competition, and they can presumably still get back what they gave up for him. I don't think it was dumb to not have faith in McKee, bring in guy who knew this system or add a veteran to the QB room either. But at this point it would seem McKee stays.

Seems like Weru and Bernard both might make the roster. Bernard more to keep him off of waivers. But still seems like they might be able to get him through.

I think it was said before, but the backup QB likely is decided if anyone offers much for McKee. If no one does, then Dalton is cut.

I agree with PC about Ty. I'm not sure what happened, but they gave him plenty of reps on Saturday and he looked pretty good.

The games don’t mean anything compared to the practices. So we really don’t know what their plan is. But no matter what, Mannion felt it valuable to have his voice and experience in the room and that has value. To all the QBs, even Hurts.

I think people overestimate what happens in the preseason games - by a lot. We have a bunch of yahoos searching for a spot for Carson Steele on the 53 on twitter and in blogs.

The Eagles have some tough decisions to make. They are not made yet. Not even Howie probably could pick the last few on the 53 right now. There will be internal discussions and differences of opinions to come.

I am someone who doesn't take preseason seriously. That being said, Dalton has been missing receivers by a lot, which shouldn't happen no matter what the goal is for that preseason game.

Usually the vet gets deference over the younger guy. However McKee is not a rookie. If Dalton can’t perform better than he has, McKee would be the guy to keep. He is a known commodity with the club.

Agreed. Dalton could still be the guy. Especially if McKee has more trade value (and little chance of being here next year), though it might not be much more. They may also still think Dalton will be a better presence in the room. They already know what he is, the only issue would be if age has caught up with him.

They could also keep both of them, at least until the trade deadline. But that costs in some other way.

If we keep Dalton as our #2 QB, that is a terrible mistake. If he ever plays, everyone will see why.

I don't think we really want to see anyone besides Hurts play. And sometimes the best back-up QB who never plays is a different role than the back-up QB you actually need to play.

And they carried Sam Howell as the #3 all last year. Different situation this year but don't they still have to get Payton through waivers to keep him on the PS?

You just never really know with Howie in terms of how he makes these moves and valuations. He may have just liked the opportunity cost on Dalton (cap hit also very low), and he may yet get more than they gave up for him if another team is in need. Heck, knowing Howie, and based on last year, he may yet trade for someone else entirely. Last year at this exact time they still had McCord and DTR (who they got for PIckett) as well as McKee, and then waived both and did the Howell deal.

McKee does not have enough value as a trade chip to make keeping Dalton as the #2 palatable.

Roseman loves the QB factory approach so Payton will be retained unless something really serious is wrong with him.

I think it is more about making sure McKee gets the new system and is sharpened by competition. This is a big season for Hurts - if he struggles, Roseman already has plans to find/identify the next guy.

Having McKee and Payton makes much more sense than having anything to do with Dalton. Vet scrubs like him will always be available if needed.

I agree. If we need someone to replace Hurts for a couple games, then McKee is the guy I'd trust most.

I'm hoping MLB follows suit or at least moves the game to after the season is over. At a minimum, do away with the homerun derby, which messes up partiicpants' swings.

That's basically an urban legend, and perception just because a few Derby guys struggled. Certainly not seeing any ill effects on Schwarber and Harper in the big picture. Their slumps and aches could have happened with or without it.

Though, I could be more easily convinced that the Philies were affected by simply not getting a few days off and having so many players involved (including in 2024 too. Then again, what's Wheeler's excuse?).

The NBA is the only other league that might consider doing this. Like the NFL their game is unwatchable due to the lack of defense. The NHL is more fun to watch without that but they probably should still get rid of it, especially since they're going to play Olympics and other tournaments. MLB is actually the only league where it is a good even. And the Derby is a good event.

The other thing is all three of those leagues don't have a neutral site championship, so they all use the ASG for business and shmoozing too.

Four QBs. Not that surprising based on the latest coverage. They're still not sure who they really want to be the #2, in addition to hoping a trade market develops for one or the other. Also possible they go get a different QB entirely.

I don't agree with them keeping 4 QBs and 4 TEs and waiving Bernand and Weru. I guess they think they won't be claimed, but that is a chancy gamble.

The moves certainly speak for themselves. They either feel confident they won't lose both IPP players or value both Payton and not settling the #2 QB position more. And while the IPP guys are a good story and have tantalizing potential, they also waived two other 7th-round picks besides Bernard. So it may be a chancy gamble, but it's not something of massive value that they are gamblng with. You just can't hide guys on the NFL roster of a Super Bowl contender, let alone two. And the IPP designation merely gives you one extra spot, not any protection from other teams plucking them away at any time (including now).

This might be true, but it's not like the Eagles did themselves or the QBs any favors as there were almost no passes longer than 10 yards downfield.

I'm kind of sick of all the blog writers and fans decrying the terrible QBs. McKee was worth a 1st round pick last year (hahaha) and now all of the sudden he's trash. No inbetween. I expect it from the fans, but these guys like Kempski, BLG, etc. - they are just fans pretending to be journalists. No clue at all.

The friggin' preseason games mean NOTHING compared to the practices, nothing. People just don't get it. And Andy Dalton is a 3-time Pro Bowler, 15+ years in the league - like that means nothing in a room where the offense is really different for the first time in a long time and you have a delicate situation on the offense with the revolving door OCs and a Super Bowl MVP QB learning to play differently.

If guys can make a contribution (see Payton lining up on STs) they make the roster - pretty much period. If they can't they are either on IR (if it's physical growth they require) or the back half of the practice squad. This isn't hard to figure out, the front office shows the fans every year, but nobody picks it up.

These guys are managing personnel, coaching, etc. for their JOBs. Pretty much everyone (except Howie, probably) knows they could be gone in a year if things break really bad every year. They have to win - this is not a franchise in a rebuilding mode and they are not playing dynasty fantasy football.

I really don't have a clue how Tanner McKee would do if Hurts went down. I think he's probably better than many backups, but the people seeing him every day likely have a far better idea of what he's capable of. I probably do have a little more of a clue about Dalton - he probably can competently run the offense, but is not going to light it up or open up the run game. Payton is probably 2 years at least away from making a judgement on that and in the meantime can add value on STs which allows them to keep another player on the roster that they may not have been able to because they were unsure about putting them on the field on STs - you don't get that value from many QBs.
