I am not surprised. There was a lot of speculation that they actually were going to hand the reins over to the new OC that was hired (unlike with Kellen Moore, where the reins were handed over and then pulled back after game 2). This was going to mean that Stoutland was going to have to give up some input in the run game - especially if the philosophy didnāt match up, ala all the West Coast guys they pursued.
They (not Nick) want a new offensive philosophy and we are actually going to see it implemented this year. They donāt want a simplified pass-game, run oriented, conservative offense. They want a cutting edge offense with all the bells and whistles (motion, matchups, timing based, etc). This isnāt a big surprise. Nicks success has been standing in the way of it, but this year opened the door again.
It remains to be seen if they can implement this successfully. Jalen will be asked to things heās uncomfortable with, and while I think heās such a winner that he will be open to improving; there certainly will be some uneven returns in the offseason practices and early next year as he gets used to doing things a new way and gets his timing down. Thatās when our OC will earn his big bucks. Will he be able to handle the pressure he gets when things look rough early and keep a steady hand or wonāt he and the inevitable implosion will follow? There werenāt be a course correction back to conservative like happened last year under Moore as they are clearing one of Nicks supporters in this (Stoutland).
Iām not going to argue with management. These guys have brought us 2 rings, another SB appearance, and consistent playoff appearances in the last decade. Iām willing to let it play out. But there will be a sink or swim moment for the OC early on.
