i'm good with this move even if they don't cancel out the compensation, a better pass rush gives them a better chance to win the super bowl, gotta push some chips to the middle of the table. As you said, he is eligible for a comp pick if he signs elsewhere as long as the Eagles aren't shopping as well.

That said, the difference between the Jets third and the Eagles third is pretty significant, so i'm happy the pick they gave up is their own third. Win Win.

If the Eagles let him walk after this year, it turns a late 3rd in 2026 into an even later 3rd in 2027. Edge rushers with potential get good contracts even with an injury history. Not such a bad thing when you have three 3rds.

There is very little downside to this move beyond limiting your ability to replace him via free agency (and cancelling the comp pick), which seems unlikely to be the Eagles move in 2026 anyway.

I don't think this is correct. Aren't comp picks only applicable for players signed/lost via free agency?

It's why trading for players can be better than signing free agents. A player that is traded for will not be counted towards cancelling out comp picks the following year.

And I am saying I don't think they are eligible for a comp pick for Phillips since he didn't sign with the Eagles as a free agent.

Maybe it is only on players lost and how/when they were acquired is no longer factored in, but I thought it used to be.

Oh i misunderstood sorry. Field Yates is reporting that he is eligible for compensation for the Eagles so I assume he is too, I know MLB might have limited based on service time but NFL it’s just FAs lost. Yates also speculated that he would be a fourth round pick not third.

The compensation used to be affected by the contract they signed (with the new team), so if he does well in Philly and signs a big contract it could make a big difference. It looks like some things have changed with the 2020 CBA, so my thoughts may be outdated.

It is still determined by new contract value. I think as an edge rusher with the traits he has, a new contract will be significant unless he completely washes out here or has a significant long term injury.

It seems unlikely that he won't wash out here without an injury. Even swapping a 3rd next year for a 4th the year after isn't terrible (although the rule used to be that a 3rd this year is worth a 4th next year, so if the comp is really a 4th, then it's essentially swapping a 3rd for a future 5th and Phillips). The Dolphins won't be on the hook for a draft pick since it's a comp pick, so it seems like a win-win.

Given some injuries/retirements this seems like a good trade. His first 3 years were very good.
