Why would you want Francoeur if you could get Bourjos?

Maybe Bourjos can't be traded (either because he was claimed or because he still hasn't been exposed to trade waivers. Hard to put together a three-team deal if the latter). Also would you have wanted the Phillies to trade away an international slot?

If two teams are mulling Ruiz, why wouldn't they have just claimed him? We are only talking about six-weeks salary

Unless they cleared earlier this month and it's just getting out now it really doesn't make sense
It stands to reason that waivers were asked on multiple Phils' players as soon as that was permissible - which was beginning August 2nd. Clubs can only request waivers on seven players in a given day, so they wouldn't have asked about everybody right away - but they certainly would have gotten the "easy ones" out of the way - and Howard and Ruiz are as easy as they come. So it's safe to assume that they both cleared waivers a couple of weeks ago.

And "mulling" Ruiz doesn't mean that the teams in question really want him. Claiming him would have saddled them with his contract immediately. Now, that would cost an acquiring team "only" about $3 million - but depending on the team, that's real money. Yankees? Yeah, no big deal. Pirates? Uuh huh.

Don't forget Ruiz also has the right to veto any claim and or trade due to his 10/5 rights

Pretty good reason to claim him though. Really, there is almost no chance the Phillies would have let him go for nothing, they would not want it to look like they were dumping him (nor are they interested in dumping him) and it would be even worse if they didn't pull him back and then he refused to join the claiming team. But he's either expensive enough or not valuable enough to make any one team think it would have been advantageous to claim him. Presumably they already knew what he would cost (or that he's unlikely to be traded, be that his choice or the team's) from July talks.

Certainly seems like the Phillies probably mass cleared all the guys they weren't ever really gonna trade (and probably Howard, given the obvious) but waited until late to dangle the prizes. Was same with Utley last year but he was coming off DL.

They could scarcely afford to trade Hellickson right now!

Wonder what's up w/ Bourjos, it is certainly possible he didn't clear, and it's also possible that no one wants him, but it also wouldn't shock me if he ends up coming back as the fifth outfielder next year (presumably not until after the Rule V draft).
