Puig no longer traveling with the Dodgers. If they put him through waivers, you may get him for free, or like with the Pirates deal, get an extra prospect just to take on his contract if he passes through waivers.

Puig was sent to the minors. Dodgers told him that they would trade him or send him down. They just added Reddick so it was actually logical to send Puig down given the way he was playing. Puig had options left. He'll be back in a month if he can get his game together.

One thing that should be interesting, is who claims Hellickson through waivers. I can't see anyone claiming him before the Rockies(who didn't sell at the deadline(4.5 out of the Wild Card)), they've won 8 out of their last 10 and Hellickson could be their #1. Then Pittsburgh(3.5 out of the Wild Card) would be next in line. I would think they would have to claim him if he got to them, their rotation is a mess.

Lets be real about Hellickson and Rockies. THe Rockies are loaded with young pitching. Jon Gray has been a stud and has the pedigree of being a top 3 pick. Gray has a 3.94 ERA and 1.15 WHIP while pitching half of his games in Coors. If you throw out his first 2 starts of the year, he has a 3.30 ERA. He's been very impressive.

Maybe something will happen with Chooch this month and maybe something can happen with a Hernandez or even a Gomez (despite his save totals, folks are underwhelmed with him, fairly or not). Otherwise, I don't expect much from Stand Pat Matt.

Well, outside of Hellickson, everyone else will just get you more of what you have in the farm system.

Since every team is above .500 (and some well above) except Lakewood, and only Lehigh is full of nonprospects, adding another player similar to what you already have is a pretty marginal improvement - how many Waldings and Toccis do we need?

If Joseph, Rupp and Altherr can finish strong, it's a pretty good "development" season in my eyes.
Especially given the young pitching staff.
So holding on to Ruiz or Blanco isn't the worse thing, they may have more value in the clubhouse than the marginal prospects they'd garner.

If Hellickson brings back "more of what we have" in terms of pitching arms I'd be pretty pleased. You can never have too much pitching depth. We definitely need a bit more quality reliever depth, and teams often use 7 or 8 starters in a season, especially when pitchers are young.

Lehigh is not full of nonprospects. For a AAA team, it has the most truly solid prospects I can remember. Eflin has moved on, but we still have Crawford, Williams, Thompson, and Knapp. They also have more marginal prospects in Lively, Valentin, Luis Garcia, and the injured Asher and Appel. Really, I think in terms of future MLB WAR, this may be our greatest concentration of prospects on the farm.

LKW has been creeping closer to .500 and is 21-15 for the second half an a half game in first for the second half. SAL does the split season thing.

Well, depends how you see Stassi, Ruf, Hunter, Burriss, Buchanan, Morgan, Garcia (29), Mariot, Hinojosa et al.
To me it's a squad full of solid AAAA players, which is not a bad thing, you actually want that in your AAA team so you have guys who can come up for a month and not be totally useless.

Compared to other AAA teams they have a solid group of prospects, but when you look at the rest of the Phillies farm teams, there are almost no "ringers," experienced minor league players at Clearwater or Reading, even an older player like Numata is a conversion project, not a minor league "lifer."

"Ringers" playing major roles -
Reading; Serna, Fox, Vasquez
Clearwater; Campbell, Martin (older players who should be in Reading or higher if they were prospects)
Lakewood; Tomscha

This is very different that the norm for the Phillies farm system where they drafted lots of older college players as filler, brought in "lifers" to fill out rosters, and inflated the records of minor league teams that way.

I would be curious to know what concrete, as in backed up by facts or at least observation has led to animosity against Klentak. Or maybe it is just a personal style issue, but I haven't seen anything in particular to give me negative vibes are him as GM.

Personally, I really like Klentak so far. I see no issues with style. Decision-making has been good.

I would have preferred to get three top prospects from the Rangers for Hellickson, but they would have had to be crazy to do that. Fans and ignorant reporters are speculating that we messed up the trade deadline since Hellickson is still here, but there is no evidence whatsoever that we had a good offer on the table for him. Sellers did appear to do well at the deadline, especially the Yankees and the Brewers, so I expect some are disappointed we didn't get in on the market.

Am I disappointed that the Phillies didn't make a deal or two or three this past week? Yes, I am. However, I don't want them making deals that don't make sense. They had no urgency to move any player at the deadline this year. If the offers for Hellickson weren't really all that good, then the right move at this time was to do nothing.

If I recall correctly, the Phillies have been successful in moving some players for prospects in August in recent years. We may see some action in coming weeks or maybe not.

I think we are just seeing impatience in some. We have been somewhat spoiled by the haul that we have received for other jettisoned players and now want it for our free agent signings each year. That may be a little unrealistic. We were compensated well for players that grew up in our system, and although it would be nice to get more prospects each year from our "rentals", that does not judge Klentak as a failure.

Although we don't know what the brain trust felt, I am comfortable thinking that they probably wanted a certain return, and if they did not get it, were comfortable with keeping these guys. It really doesn't need to be even explained more than that.

Right and those folks may not realize that Hellickson does not have the same value as Hamels, Utley, Rollins etc. There are red flags around Hellickson since he has an injury history and largely mediocre career stats.
