I am somewhat surprised that the Rays passed on Joseph. He seems to be their kind of player: low cost, on the young side, modestly productive, with a chance for growth in his performance. But they did get Duda for practically nothing.

Joseph is more likely to move in December, he doesn't have the track record to trust in a stretch run.
But he's a better bet to hit than most FA DH/1B types with upside, so do you pay with prospects or give some 32 year old $10M and hope he has a year left?

Not really, Joseph is still very raw as a hitter, those three lost seasons show.

I would be wary of adding him for a stretch run, but in the winter, where I can write him in the lineup starting in April, and hopefully have him take his game up a notch by next August,
I would value him much higher as an inexpensive power hitter under my control for 4 years and with the potential to be a 30+ HR guy.
He's a better option than most of the FA 1B/Dh types that will become available.
Let the Phillies suffer though his growing pains this year, then add him when he's more of a finished product.

Some speculation going around today that the Phillies will call up Hoskins without regard to a Joseph trade. Would makes sense since they can DH Joseph for the Angels series and then they go to Colorado

Kind of implies that Rosenthal may be hearing something. It does explain why Thompson is still on the 25-man roster - if they option him again, they can't recall him for 10 days (barring putting somebody else on the DL).

Thought Ryan Lawrence had a decent idea. That if Oakland swings a Yonder Alonso trade to the Yankees that the Athletics would be a good candidate to trade Joseph to.

I don't know how you can make this assumption - e.g., that no discussions concerning Hellickson, with anybody, were under way prior to today. You have inside information as of yesterday?

Atown, I think Rule V concerns are greatly overblown. There were only 18 picks made last year. 16 the year before. Teams don't have enough space on their own 40-man rosters, and it's too hard for a guy to stick. Less than half of them do. It's highly unlikely the Phillies will lose two players (even if two are drafted), and one of those will probably be replaced by them making a pick.

If it's really a huge concern and there's no trade market for Joseph or Rupp (which it seems there isn't) you can always move them just to move them but if you have to expose 8 guys instead of 6 their value is probably still higher than the tiny risk of losing a second or third player.

It seems like very logical speculation. It is a strange tweet, written as if someone had previously suggested that Hellickson was about to be traded and was, therefore, unlikely to pitch tonight. Rosenthal didn't say Jordan, Rupp, Galvis, and Hernandez are in the lineup so they aren't about to be traded. Yes, of course the availability of Hellickson would have been mentioned by the Phillies to many teams and some of those would have hinted what they might be willing to offer and how many $ they want. That's routine. The Rosenthal tweet is just pompous nonsense, unless he heard something more specific today. And now that my computer has updated the thread, we see two more tweets indicating that there is at least current smoke.

That's not that small a number and we have one of the larger stocks of 2nd-tier prospects in the upper minors, so we are a natural target in Rule 5. Even if a guy is returned at the end of ST or, especially if later in the season, the disruption factor can be severe. If the guy has basically sat on an MLB bench for a few months, it can become close to a lost season, although lucrative for the player. To me, it's a big risk to take to trade a guy in July instead of November or at the deadline.
