I believe six years is the limit for a FA not on your own team, seven if it's a FA who is (eight is only if they are already under contract and the new deal starts after that).

I guess technically you are saying they could extend him to rework the deal, but not until January. I don't think that's true though. The offer sheet is a binding contract once accepted, and extensions usually only start after earlier contract is up (as with Dvorak last year and now Foerster).

Yes. That is probably still preferable including for cap reasons.

They could go down that route. The good news is two of the Flyers trade chips in that scenario now have cost certainty in Foerster and Tippett.

It also looks like they are bringing back Giroux, I'm fine with it, no details on contract yet.

Yeah either of those guys could be in a deal but so could Cates or Barkey/Bump. Tippett has a limited NTC. Trading Foerster right after extending him would also be a bad look.

I reckon Briere is prepared to strike out here too, if it comes to it. It sends a message to future free agents and trade targets.

They certainly would have a forward or two to trade, I mean if the Ducks don’t match,, If Zegras is a going to play center, then the Flyers would have 6 centers. I suppose a fourth line of all centers Cates - Couturier - Acciari would be okay. With the Giroux signing, they are also overstocked on wingers. If you assume

Martone - Carlsson - Foerster
Michkov - Zegras - Konecny
Tippett - Dvorak - Bump/Barkey/Giroux
Cates - Couturier - Acciari

You can argue a lot of teams are going to be mad (as Weekes' tweet already mentions). But if the Sharks or Ducks can't get something done those players and agents will know the Flyers might.

Two interesting things from reading stuff.

One, the four picks are a bit of a Catch-22. If the Flyers are as good as they want to be because of this they are worth less to them, but that's also a big reason for Anaheim to match.

And, I assume this structure is meant to create cash-flow problems for the Ducks.

I don't think the Flyers can afford at least 2 players on this list. Probably more. If you have to dump players, then it will require picks that the Flyers will not have.

And you haven't even got to the D yet.

I don't think Giroux is signing if the Ducks don't match. They could also trade another forward (Cates? Tippett if Zegras goes back to wing?). Or Risto.

A thing to watch: another team signing Zegras or Drysdale to an offer sheet.

1. I support the offer sheet to Leo Carlsson
2. Giving Anaheim 4 first rounders is a way better use of the picks than giving them to Brent Flahr.
3. I assume that if we get Carlsson that someone like Tippett is a goner to partially replace the picks.
4. Can’t believe that in his market Briere could not have got a first rounder for Risto.
5. That being said if Anaheim matches the offer sheet I won’t feel like the Flyers accomplished anything. No points for trying.

I know you hate Flahr but Wheeler says the Flyers have the 8th best prospect group in NHL currently.

And just because Risto hasn't been traded in the last 72 hours doesn't mean he's not still available. Or, yes, a first is still not being offered for him. We know the ask has always been at least that. But right now I would think the Flyers need to let this play out. If they do trade Risto are they just going to ride with Viricek (and either Giroux or Carlsson upgrading the forwards/PP) or still try to get someone else? They've been linked to Morgan Rielly but that would be a lot of years and money to take on.
