I didn't see a GDT earlier today, so I posted the following on the Clearwater thread. I didn't start a GDT since the game was over.

Looks like no GDT today (3/1/17).

Phillies playing Rays. Phillies tied game at 5-5 in the top of the ninth (lead off walk to Quinn, doubles by Valentin and Gomez). Marriot pitching bottom of the 9th for the Phillies starts off with a walk. Second hitter up grounds to first base (Hoskins) who gets no outs. His second error today on a ball that should be an easy out and possible DP. Deep fly moves runner to third (first and third). Next batter Ks. Next batter pops into shallow left for the third out.

FINAL: Phillies 5, Rays 5.

It was clear that they were not going past 9 today when the Rays didn't have a pitcher warming up while they batted in the bottom of the inning. I'm not sure if they had another pitcher available or not but with so many players in camp, one would certainly expect that they had someone since it was a home game for them.

Phillies face a bus ride back to Clearwater. I think I read it is about a two hour trip, so I can see that they would not want extra innings, especially all those players who were already out of the game by the ninth inning.

While I certainly do not like ties, it was good to see the Phillies score 2 runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game. A tie is better than a loss even though wins, loses, and ties mean little in spring training.

Asher gave up 3 runs on 4 hits (one homer) and 2 walks in his 2 innings today. Other pitchers giving up a run were Morgan (one in two innings pitched) and Neris (one in one inning). Velasquez started the game with two scoreless innings (one hit, no walks, one K).

Phillies had 3 doubles and a triple in their eight hits. Altherr was 2 for 4 with a double, triple, and 3 RBIs. Quinn had their only stolen base, and was 1 for 3 with a walk. Joseph, Nava, and Crawford were also 1 for 3 today. Gomez and Valentin both came in as replacements and were both 1 for 2, with the doubles in the ninth as the Phillies tied the game.

If Altherr keeps hitting he'll be the everyday RF, the money is a sunk cost, Altherr is a plus fiielding OF, and if he regains the stroke of two years ago or better, he'll be part of the core going forward.

Well, let's not forget that it's spring training. He is not going to win a starting job out of camp, even if he is still doing it on March 31. If Kendrick is a disaster they could sit him down and move Saunders to LF but I reckon even that would take two months. I think the old-school baseball rules still apply here, the manager asked for these veterans, the GM's major moves were acquiring these veterans, same as it ever was, especially if the goal is to flip them. But it's not that big a deal because I think pronouncing Altherr as fully healthy and fully productive would be premature. He'll need the three months too, hopefully the ABs are there for him to make the case (because he'll also need to fend off Quinn if Quinn stays healthy).

I think Kendrick and Saunders are insurance, but Klentak won't hesitate to flip them in June and July.

It's too early to know, but if Altherr is 100% and has improved his swing, he'll start - he's a golden glove caliber OF, and he has good power, contact and plate discipline were the questions, and he was making really good progress before he was injured. All you need from him is .260/.330/.450 and he'll start in RF indefinitely.

Stassi is also making a push, if he can field decently (i.e. not far below average) in LF and keep hitting he has a shot at a platoon LF/1B defensive sub role.
I dont' see him as a starter, but more like some of the LH bats we've had in the past, with the advantage that he's a plus fieldling 1B at a position where good fielders are rare. But he has to be an adequate LF as well, b/c no one carries a defensive 1B sub unless he can play the OF and PH.
