There's no control group for it, and also I think pitchers can take to or train for the role, but I wonder more about whether if it is the best way to get outs. Just seems like a lot of guys struggle after sitting down between innings, while others can't get five or six hitters out if they have a weak side. Plus the analytics are so much more than just L and R now for match-ups.
Of course we often see a guy pitch a great inning and then get replaced by someone who doen't, but we still don't know how guy #1 actually would have done going back out.
It is something to look to acquire or develop next year, which they arguably did last time around by swapping Soto for Banks and signing Ross. But safe to say it won't be starting now. They do like to get a guy for just one batter/the last out and not come back, because they already know who has the next pocket.
But it also seeems certain Nola and Luzardo are available out of the pen in Game 1 and 2, if not both, and they could certainly give you more than three outs. Buehler' too, but we're still not sure he's good
