The one thing Gelb notes - Crawford is actually the one losing playing time in all of this. He'll sit when Sosa plays LF and he'll also sit when Berroa plays, unless Marsh just gets a day off for a day off's sake. Or if they start sitting Garcia, of course.
I think a lot of teams have better bench players because they have a flexible DH spot. Sometimes it's a slugger, sometimes it's a Kody Clemens type or a Sosa type. And that's the thing - nobody thinks the Phillies should have the modern-day Dave Roberts or even a Wes Helms or Matt Stairs. A Clemens or a Weston Wilson who's already a proven fringe major leaguer is all that's missing if the kids can't do it (and need regular playing time).
Clemens has a 0.6 WAR this year (though he does appear to be essentially starting, and at 1B with just a 100 OPS+ to boot. Not so much "too good to be a bench player" as "good enough to start for the Twins.").
Wilson is back to below replacement level and 97 OPS+ but that's still better than Reyes or Kemp, and he doesn't need to be developed or play a lot (he has only 39 ABs).
