MLB only getting the first 10 picks live on broadcast or cable TV sure looks like a misfire to me. What are they thinking/ The draft will never be that popular compared to the NFL or NBA since few fans know the picks, but sending most of the first round to streaming is a major failure. If NBC has the rights they should have transitioned the coverage to something like USA network but still kept options for viewers. I guess it could be on the NBCSN channels but that is limited to Comcast and Youtube TV for the most part.

I would think this is part of the problem (though the NHL is also pretty much an All-Zoom draft). Has just never been good TV, and the time slot stinks too.

But the rest of the first round is still on MLBN. Streaming-only after that. Honestly it's a miracle the first 10 picks are on NBC. Seems like this might be something MLB made them carry as part of the games package?

MLBN is just not on a whole lot of households. I think this is all about NBC wanting the rights to as many pieces of All Star weekend as they can and MLB wanting money rather than exposure.

They should have drawn a line to say the entire first and probably second rounds would be televised and if you don't have a widely available channel to do that (i.e. ESPN or FS1) then you simply are not getting the rights. They know a broadcast network (i.e. NBC) could never devote enough time to this also.

As I said - a misfire by MLB. Lots of people I know were pretty pissed about the Peacock weekend they did last week too. MLB gets a little money. And a few million fans expecting to see their local team suddenly can't. We know this ends in MLB.TV being a true national package when all this is renegotiated, but that does not excuse small misfires along the way.

But isn't this the first time it has aired anywhere else besides MLBN?

They barely even have an exclusive window, there are two local MLB games starting before the 10th pick is finished.

well that does seem like poor negotating on MLB's part then. But they must have loved the Peacock deal enough to let NBC have whatever they wanted. Because they don't really get any money from putting it on MLBN and MLB.TV.

I don't know.... the thought of taking a consensus 50-ish ranked prospect at 36 and then having to overpay him out of a Stanford scholarship does not appeal that much to me but I'm sure I'd get behind it if it happens.
