Attending the early rounds of the draft? Well, it might be less pointless than buying a ticket to watch paint dry, but only marginally.
I’ve been following the draft closely for years — decades, actually — from when it was nothing but an audio feed of a conference call. It was, and at bottom still is, about the picks; not about drama, about building suspense, about a bunch of talking heads. It has become a circus — but a boring one; Jonathan Mayo is not a substitute for the lion tamer or the clown act.
Apparently, MLB believes that this kind of thing is “entertainment.” If they’re right, that’s a terrible commentary on the audience — spend the evening being inundated with a combination of blather and advertising, while sharing information that was once provided in…less than an hour? And we’re to pay for the “privilege” of that?
Pay money to sit through that? Umm…no thanks.
