Yah, I think it's safe to say Sanchez is untouchable. Kingery and Crawford are not.

It's rare teams get somebody's top prospect in these deals anyway. Let alone a Top 10 leaguewide guy. Certainly not for a rental. That's what they ask for, that's what writers write about, and then in the end it's other guys. If memory serves Thompson and Williams were both the second-choice guys from Texas. Verlander got the Astros' 3rd, 9th and 11th at the time (according to MLB). But he was controllable. If you're only get Machado for 3 months I don't think you give up more than two decent pieces (though Lively is just a throw-in in the above proposal really).

Can you do a PTBNL or cash component to the trade that's contingent on him re-signing?

Unless the O's want to dump the $ or a rival team is aggressive, it's still early to worry about it. If this team is playing ..550-.600 baseball on July 15 this conversation is gonna be a lot simpler. Ditto if they're under .500.

I think Squire wrote when the injury happened that it probably would be serious and take Quinn out of the lineup for a long time. I think it was half tongue-in-cheek, but now look at where we are. Hard to believe anyone is that injury-prone.

It really does seem like there is just something about the guy's body (and, granted, his style of play). Because it's never the same thing, nothing actually chronic or repeated (though sometimes things can be connected). Hopefully still not a major surgery/rehab (though if it is, a spot on the 40 opens).

We have seen other players in the past who just never overcome injuries. Quinn would be a good bench player if he could stay healthy. I wish him the best in getting back in action at AAA and ready for a call up if needed. With surgery, they are saying he will miss 6 to 8 weeks or so. But we will see if he makes it back this year.

It's early. I'm not sold unless they're playing this well by the Allstar break.
There are a lot of promising signs, but also a lot of young players, and young teams tend to blow hot and cold.
85 wins would be a heck of a season after last year.

Yes. Quinn will have surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his finger. Six to eight weeks - which is to say, another half-season missed.

That's fine, I'm not either. But the team is improving, not declining. This isn't 2016. And CD isn't entirely wrong about the second-half record from last year looking like more than random sample. The way Pivetta and much of the bullpen looks seems very real, and the questions about the offense would sure be answered in part by Manny Machado.

But any trade talk/fantasizing about that now - with no extension - is based on the premise that they'll be within few games of the division in July. If they aren't, nobody's gonna be talking about that.

And if the Orioles somehow decide to trade Machado to the Cubs on June 1 instead of July 15 I don't think anyone in Philly is gonna think Klentak blew it.

Do we need a trade deadline thread already? Seidman's article is much more sensible:

Look, for example, at the J.D. Martinez trade from last July. The Tigers dealt him to the Diamondbacks in exchange for a three-player package that almost every analyst deemed light. None of the players the Tigers received were listed among the top 10 D-backs prospects on the major sites.

If the Phillies were to offer the Orioles J.P. Crawford, Dylan Cozens and a pitching prospect or two, that might at least get a conversation started.

It really would depend upon what the Cubs give up in the deal to determine if “anyone in Philly” is gonna think Klentak blew it. If they give up Adddison Russell plus a top prospect and a crap shoot 3rd player they won’t be. If it is a lesser package some will think he blew it.

If the Cubs trade Machado to the Braves on June 1 or July 15 plenty in Philly will think Klentak blew it.

i don't think the cubs will flip machado. if they trade for him they will keep him. i'd like to sign him for next year and beyond.

Machado has declared that he is going to test free agency, so I don't think any team will sign him this year. And I don't think anyone has suggested that the Cubs will try to flip him.

I think he gets traded by the deadline but not for as much as the media has been thinking. Baltimore will get more in a trade than the compensation draft pick so they have reason to move him. It will be like this past years free agent market and a deal will get done before the deadline but for less than is expected.

I don't think the SS/3B thing is worth worrying about right now. If you're going to trade for him, he's going to play SS in 2018. If you're going to also give him $300 million, that's another conversation. If the Phillies don't want him at SS and he won't move, they can walk away. But I doubt that's a deal breaker for them.

My guess is if you sign him to a 7-10 year deal, the first couple years maybe you need him at SS to entice him but after that all bets are off and he’ll move.

I would have no problem offering Crawford, Cozens, Thompson and Suarez for him. That is a decent package but does not involve anyone for which we have a need. I would probably open with Crawford, Randolph, Suarez and an A ball pitcher but would agree to the first four if it wrapped him up. Of course we do have to leave open the possibility we may need some prospects for a Cole Hamels deal also and we do not want to start stripping away the farm system.

I’m guessing they’d take the pick rather than Crawford and throw ins. No one is giving squat for Cozens (hitting .229 in his second shot at AAA) or Thompson - why waste 40 man spots? Suarez has some value as a top 10 prospect with a low 90s fastball and good change up, but I’d guess it would take at least one more Top 10 prospect for them to even consider a package featuring him.
