He hasn't been a college coordinator or a college head coach or a head coach of any kind. And he only coached college football at this level for one year. That doesn't seem like hair splitting. That's maybe a guy Penn State hires in 2012 or 2014 when the job was to start from scratch and a risky unconventional choice made sense (though even O'Brien had college experience and Franklin was winning at a small school in the best league in college football). I guess one way to get a guy with a better record against Top 10 teams than Franklin is if he's 0-0.
There's just no reason to think he'd want the job or they'd want him. Being a tactical genius is maybe 5% of the job of college football head coach, and 50% of it is stuff pro head coaches don't have to put up with.
I still reckon you don't fire James Franklin if you don't already have your list of successors (because that's how all ADs work), and that is probably a two-man list.
My only question would be if there's another Kirby Smart or Dan Lanning out there. Heck, why isn't Jim Knowles that? Brian Hartline's name is also on the clickbait sites. He has a longer and better CFB resume than Brady.
