For all the people who say that was a bad trade, the Phillies got more WAR from Hayes than Cleveland did from those five guys combined. Franco's best years were probably in Texas and he was a butcher in the field. There's a reason, he ended up primarily as a DH. In all fairness, I consider Von Hayes to be a genuinely good underappreciated player by the phanbase. The phanbase never accepted him because a) the five-for-one optics was real bad (Owens should have asked Cleveland to throw in a couple of warm bodies just for appearances sake), b) the popular Manny Trillo was part of the package going to Cleveland, c) fan-favorite Pete Rose rode him real hard both publicly and in the clubhouse, d) he always came across as something of a pretty boy which went over like a lead balloon in hardscrabble Philadelphia and e) he was a centerpiece player during the decline years (though that was no fault of his).
Franco made a brief comeback as a 55 year old playing independent league ball in 2014.
