That's the way it is with veteran relievers. One season, they are good, the next they could be crummy. We just seem to have abysmal luck with them. With us, it often seems that they turn crummy here but then rediscover their mojo elsewhere. See also, Mike Timlin, Todd Jones, Roberto Hernandez the reliver, Arthur Rhodes and now Andrew Bailey.
And Bailey now reminds me a little bit of Norm Charlton. The Phillies stashed him on the DL for year in '94 while he recovered from surgery, then he was horrific for them when coming back in '95 and the Phillies cut him in June. The Mariners picked him up and he went on to have the best half season of his career and emerged as Seattle's lockdown closer. Then, in '96, he stunk again.
