I’m becoming mildly interested in John Spikerman again. Hitting .298 at Jersey Shore in the cold, damp spring with a .485(!!) OBP out of the leadoff spot. Almost a .900 OPS, however with no power. He’s fast, stole 30 bases last year. Spray-hitting lefty, wish he played CF more, but Saltiban is commanding the reps out there.

Week in review spotlight on Nolan Beltran this time. Definitely having a good year repeating the level with much more patience and a little power. They seem to be grooming him as more of a utility guy than a middle infielder these days.

Note there is an FCL game today (Logan Dawson and Romeli Espinosa with the only hits so far) though without Monday baseball elsewhere we might not need a new thread. Follow the rolling box link and change the date to today.

5/3/26 : Phillies Minor Leagues : week in review (4/27 - 5/3)

Quite a debut today in FCL from Mexican reliever David Hernandez. He is left-handed so the Ks might be mostly because of that,, but 2 perfect innings with 5 Ks is a nice beginning. Signed last year but was injured so did not pitch in the DSL.

I will get today tracked at some point, but Hernández was 89-91 with a changeup, slider, and curve in spring training. Was 87-91 in the game I tracked last year.

Left-handed pitchers with offspeed stuff often rack up the Ks in the lowest rungs of the minors. Hitters have just not seen lots of lefties at this point. It helps of course if they add 5 mph to their fastball like Ranger Suarez did on the way up the system. While the demise of the LOOGY is partially true, teams still carry guys like Backhus (a totally different style) if they want 3 or 4 lefties in the bullpen.

A lot of swing and miss on his curve- sharp break but not especially hard or high spin.

Navas was a little disappointing- not much life on his 4 seam and his slider probably breaks too soon, though he did throw a couple 2 seamers that darted. What you’d expect from an inexperienced arm I guess.

Navas definitely gets a bit of a pass this year. I am sure there are lots of things he can do with pitch shape in future years even if this year is more about the basics.
