Kilome doesn't allow 1st Jupiter hit til the 6th, exits with a 3-1 lead. He was probably a bit on the effectively wild side, as he walked three and hit two in addition to allowing two hits. It seems like a lot of guys try to steal on him too. Two Jupiter guys stole bases while Grullon has picked one off.

Nine up, nine down for Sixto. Greg G on the radio said Sixto hit 100 mph earlier today.

OF David Martinelli currently the hottest player in the system I think. Partially because the usual suspects are slumping but he's been a different player the last 2 weeks. Double and Homer again today.

Just going to post about Martinelli. His average has gone from .141 to .208 in less than two weeks; almost every game has been a multi-hit affair.

These are his June splits (AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS) -- .394 .429 .818 1.247

3 HRs and 3 2Bs in June. Only 2 walks, but you tend to swing when the ball looks like a grapefruit.

Seems like he found a mechanical adjustment that works for him. We hope.

We certainly can hope, but one thing I've observed in following the minors on this forum for all these years is that virtually every marginal/non-prospect, including Hewitt, has a magical couple weeks a year when it looks likes he's found the secret to correct his problems and turn himself into a prospect. CD used to call a lot of these inflection points in the seasons of our marginal prospects. Only perhaps 10% of the time was the turn-around true and sustained. It's a baffling thing. Logic says if they were able to do it for two weeks, not on flukey BABIP but on hard hit balls or a big change in BB/K, that they ought to be able to keep doing it, just as a guy who learns to run a less than 4-minute mile should be able to repeat that and make it his standard throughout the prime of his career. That extreme focus that you speak of -- the ball looks like a grapefruit -- seems to be something that some marginal/non-prospects can only grasp for a fleeting moment. It suggests that eye and mind training might be a way to improve hitters.

It is good to see Martinelli play better and he is the rare college non-top pick that does have some tools. All this should be discounted a little as a college player in Lakewood. That player should have success (this counts for Hall too). It does not mean that they have to dominate. It is just that even if they do play well they need to catch up a level (i.e. do 2 levels in a year at some point) to be seen as a good prospect.

Right now Martinelli has not even come close to that threshold, but at least he is playing better and the presence of some of his tools (even if the power and speed only grade out to average) does give him some shot to succeed at higher levels. Both he and Williams have climbed over the Mendoza line in recent weeks and Gamboa has been better the past few days after a slow comeback from injury. It is definitely a better squad now than it was a few weeks ago (+ Sixto also).
