What has happened to the Altherr of 2017. 48 extra base hits in less than 400 at bats. Seemed to this "eye" like a smooth, intelligent player who had a bright future. Too many strike-outs for sure but young, with a big upside. Now, with all the discussion about Herrera, he would have been a reasonable alternative.

Altherr is still recovering from his wrist injury last year, an injury that almost always depresses a player's production the following season.

His (second) wrist injury was three years ago. Last year it was a hamstring.

You're right; I was thinking that he never got the full year last year to recover from the wrist, and that because of that it still may be bothering him. Losing significant parts of 2016 and 2017 may have messed up his timing significantly. He probably needs a couple of months of steady play to get it back (if he is indeed able to).

He seemed to have fully recovered from the wrist last season...until the next injury. Hamstrings can be tricky and he was horrible coming back from it in September but it should not have been an issue by spring training. If he is both injury-prone and also needs a full year to find his timing every time he's injured, that's not a good formula.

But I don't think it's normal to be an .800+ player on the one hand and a sub-.600 player on the other. You look at guys like Chooch or Utley or Chase coming back from injuries and they might have struggled for a couple of months or lost 50 OPS points for a season, but nothing that extreme. Hopefully he can follow in Franco's footsteps and figure it out, though he's unlikely to get starter ABs ever again (but certainly not this year).

Altherr 2-2 with a HR now has the average up to .272. For both him and Crawford I would not react to slow SSS starts from guys who basically have not played for months.

Both will be up in September at some point though obviously they will need to sustain some high level of play the next few weeks to earn some playing time.

Thanks for the responses. Lets hope for a good second half of August for Aaron because we are thin in the outfield. I am guessing that they may have to shut Eshelman down. He must have a physical problem. Recently known for his amazing control, he didn't last two innings today and gave up 6 walks. ERA up to 5.61. Something not healthy about those results.

Hibbs now has an ERA of exactly 54.00 at 2 different levels. Hard to do.
