A larger point is that an 900 OPS in AAA from a right-handed 26 year old first baseman is not that special. They are not likely to get much better. If that projects to 800 OPS at the major league level it is basically just above replacement level (not withstanding that Santana is not doing that now - odds are Santana is significantly better given his major league history and BABIP luck).

The real larger points are 1)we are very sufficiently stocked with 1B-only and 1B-best hitters, 2) the Phillies seem concerned with 40-man slots going forward -- I think all the trades we've made have been sending guys they didn't expect to either have a 40-man stop or survive Rule 5; if they wanted to try out Meneses, the don't make that last trade. If they wanted to give Menesses a shot, he would have been brought up earlier for one of the inter-league DH periods and some PH duty. I'm far from sold on Walding and I would have given Menesses a shot earlier in season, but today I'd keep Walding in preference to him.

You only get 40 spots after all. Is Meneses worth more than Jake Thompson?

That's why you pay scouts.

If Thompson doesn't regain his velocity, I think Meneses is worth more - if his post-all star break is a continuation of his development this year and not a SSS fluke.

Meneses has played 20 games in RF this year, don't know how he looked, but if he's adequate, that's an option against tough LH pitching.

We'll see what they do.
