Thank goodness, they really need another good young arm to start flourishing otherwise the cupboard will be pretty empty after Abel and Painter. It’s like they know in advance when not to stream the interesting FIL/DSL games.

Which is why I say the Phillies need to devote a higher fraction of international and draft bonus $ to pitchers. We will see how the current crop of higher profile OFs do, but we are many years into bonus $ on OFs with only Rojas in return in recent years. We had Luzinski and Burrell earlier and Howard on low bonus. Hopefully Crawford will be in Philly later this season and cand adapt to MLB pitching and defense to be our starting CF for many years. There are still serious open questions regarding his negative launch angle. If he is a success that will put many decades of inability to sign and develop a starting CF. We had Bourn, but never appreciated him and included him in the Lidge deal (which got us a WC). It may be a very good sign for Crawford that, despite the Phillies never being satisfied with his high OBP/speed/defense/little power game, did put up 23 career rWAR.

I’m sure the Phils have no intention of going out to get centerfield help from the minors outside the organization, but I watched Johstynixon Garcia at the AAA woosox tonight- and the Red Sox have something there. He’s built like Marlon Bytd- hits the ball hard enough consistently to be a 20 homer guy, and though his reputation is as a “solid” defender, he has good centerfield instincts and closing speed. If the Sox can’t find room for Anthony, they sure don’t have room for Garcia. I could do an Escobar for Garcia deal, or something expanded that would help both clubs.

I’m a fan of Crawford and I want to see him get his chance, but defensively I think he’s going to be as disappointing as Marsh is in CF in the big leagues.
