2 games in Clearwater. Tyler Pettorini (UDFA 2B from Ohio State) was the first new signee assigned to a minor league team. Might see a couple others and some FCL players (hopefully Burkholder) today.

Interesting day in the minors yesterday:

Tjayy Walton with a 3-HIT game for CLW, who won in 10 innings.
Danny Pulido, who has been sharp since returning from the IL, with two strong innings for the win.
Nori with a hit and two walks.
At Jersey Shore, who won, Devin Saltiban with a typical 0/5 with 4 Ks.
Escobar and Tait with 2 hits each. OPSs for both around 700 after slow starts.
At Reading, who won, Miller with 2 hits, including a double, and DeMartini 2/3 with a HR, Mendez 1/4 with a Grand Slam HR.
Cabrera with 9 Ks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
At LV, who lost, Anthony 3/4 bringing his BA over .300.
Crawford 1/4 with a BB.

Anthony has been batting 3rd for the IPs for a while now, and lineup position is usually a reflection of how the organization views a player. Hitting 3rd on the AAA team is a great sign for Keaton. Who has a role for a RH 1B with limited power and average patience but who hits .300?

Anthony is an underrated prospect...great glove man at 1B although he’s a righty, and a career minor league RC+ of over 140. He’s now reached 140 at LV, 40% above league average. He’s not moving Bryce aside, of course, but that could be the RH bat we need if he could play LF or guys could shift around. I doubt it’s under consideration, but Anthony is the kind of decent player who gets overlooked by bad organizations.

I am a little surprised they are sending Nola up to Worcester, but all 3 Philly area teams are on the road so AAA probably makes the most sense in terms of challenging hitters and good facilities (hope the mound is better than Sacramento).

They said every 5 days so I would expect him to pitch on Tuesday Aug 5 and Sunday Aug 10 next week with Aug 15 as the MLB target return date. That would put Painter on Wednesday and Abel on Thursday next week pending trade deadline things.

I’m in Worcester now. Crawford hit one 400 feet but to dead center. Pigs loaded the bases in the first on two infield hits. Painter looked good in the first.

Painter done after 6.1 IP, 103 pitches. 7 hits, 1 run, 2 BB, 4 Ks. He looked decent but worried he just isn't missing as many bats as he did a couple of years ago and maybe this is just not the year to push him as he refines the spin and movement on some of his offerings.

3 hits for Keaton Anthony so far. Bunt single, 2 BBs and 2 SB from Crawford.

In person, Painter didn’t look that great. Only one run, but many baserunners and hard hit balls for outs. Command was inconsistent. His ball moved, but not always where he wanted it. As andyb said, didn’t miss all that many bats. I agree he needs more time at AAA.

I've personally all but written Painter off for this year, especially with the Phillies leaning against [if not ruling out] letting him pitch out of the pen. Doesn't mean he couldn't be a spot starter or injury replacement if Abel is traded. He could also be shut down at 120 innings, with his service time and the Phillies' incentives preserved for next year.

Next year they would have the option of waiting to call him up to get a 7th year of service - or being eligible for that top 100 prospect bonus for rookie of the year awards.

Of course top priority is always the big club so I still want him up by the end of the year if he can help us.

Yeah but can he really help us? Seems like he's actually not good enough, it would interrupt his development, and even if he came up and did okay it might not last, just like it didn't for Abel. Even Kerkering wound up not being up to his role in MLB in '23 once things got going.

I suppose we'll have a better picture of this tomorrow, and in the coming weeks. If Abel and Walker and Romano are all still here and they add a reliever plus Robertson, and Nola is Nola, they just don't really need him.

That is for the Phillies to determine. He is our best raw pitching talent in years so a few tweaks and he might be very effective. We also could use him as the 14th pitcher in September which would be a short enough time to retain his rookie eligibility for next year (the potential bonus draft pick).

There is a pretty good case to go with 12 pitchers in the postseason also so it would only be a September tryout if it does not go well.

I think you say this every year about the 12 pitchers and they never do it, except in the short series.

Bringing him up in September so he can have the experience and work with Cotham is probably not a bad idea but in what role/routine? It also appears the Phillies are going to be a in tight race for playoff seeding, which I guess is great if he pitches well but not so much if he's neither ready nor better than someone like Walker or even Ross.
