David Robertson rehab with an inning, 3 hits no runs no Ks. On one hand his stuff looked ok for a first outing, 91-92 with good action on his cutter and curve. On the other hand it looked like the pedestrian stuff that frequently showed up in his last go round with the club.

I’m ready to believe we are going to get to see the David Robertson every other team he’s played for is going to show up for the Phillies. As long as he finds the 96 mph 4 seamer.

My recollection of his last tour was that his stuff started strong and tailed off. We just need 3 months of good Robertson. He owes us.

He was definitely less strong for us and for the Marlins, and the Rangers in the second half too. But this time there's no first 2/3 of the season to wear down, so fingers crossed. Of course he's also older. The best version of him you can't get w/o a time machine.

But he doesn't owe us, any more than Aaron Nola owes us for the starts he hasn't made in the last two months or Bryce Harper owes us for the games the Phillies lost in June without him. And he was good enough in 2023.

There is not a big track record for 40-year-old relievers who were pretty good the previous season but failed to sign until midseason of the next year absent injury. Clemens and Pedro Martinez did this as starters late in their career. Martinez for us and he was pretty good for 9 starts in the regular season and his first postseason start before running out of gas in the World Series.

The Robertson of today is probably not going to be throwing much in the mid-90s, But he changes speeds well and misses enough bats. He also keeps the ball in the ballpark preferring a walk to a home run if given a choice. The logic of him giving us a good third of the season like Pedro did is sound. Just hope he can pull it off. Shockingly he pitched a career high of innings last season (72). It is pretty surprising nobody wanted to give him a 1 year deal in the $8-$10 million range again because he was definitely worth it last season.

Looking at Savant, last year his cutter averaged 93 (consistent with years prior) and a sinker he added in 2023 upticked to 94. That version of Robertson should play well again as a back end reliever.

There was definitely an uptick last year into the 93-94 range on his cutter (which is his main pitch like 60% of the time).

It really is a mystery why he did not get signed in the offseason to a 1-year deal. It does not seem to be an injury. I guess he just wanted more money than teams would risk. 2024 ended up being $11.5 million when they bought out the option. But the numbers really suggested he should get that or more. I know any 40-year-old is on the verge of falling apart at any moment, but his signing really should have happened.

Nightingale reported he wanted $10 million again, and he held firm on that. I imagine at some point he turned down teams he simply didn't want to play for, or ones where he thought they might have to turn around and trade him. And then limiting his innings also became an actual good idea. Phillies looked into signing him when Alvarado got suspended but obviously neither side was there yet. He ends up getting just a tick more than he would have had he accepted the Rangers option, except without having to play all year or get traded again.
