Phillies Minor League Recap (Week 21 8/12-8/21)

That Ramon Marquez changeup on the video is pretty impressive. If he can consistently get up into the mid 90s in a year or two we may have a sleeper prospect.

It has been awhile but now we can say once again that Vierling goes deep for Clearwater. Did not realize he was left-handed also.

Between Crawford and Miller we appear to have 2 significant prospects who bring a significant speed factor to the team. If added to Turner and Stott, plus JT and Harper still bring base stealing threats, I wonder how it could affect future team development putting a greater emphasis on speed than slugging.

Miller might hit more HR's than Bohm...Crawford may not hit a lot fewer than Bader, or Marsh, and definitely Rojas who was in center a lot at the beginning of this season.

I wonder how it could affect future team development putting a greater emphasis on speed than slugging.

I assume most teams are doing this since it is just much easier now to steal bases at a 70% clip with the new rules. More players need to develop that skill. Miller may be more of a 20 SB guy in the majors (he is just learning his craft now), but I think the time is coming in a few years where teams are going to want a half dozen guys stealing 20+.

I do think they drafted Crawford (and Miller of course) expecting more power, so it is not a huge change in philosophy. We did probably get a little one dimensional on offense with relatively unathletic guys like Bohm which then hurt the defense.

There’s nothing more for Crawford to prove in the minors. He’s a MLB talent. The only question is which OF position does he take next year? If it’s CF, then he needs to work with someone on playing that position during his off season. This mess in the OF that has gone on this past few seasons needs to be sorted out.
If the decision is to trade Crawford instead, it will be one that will bite them in the future.

I'm still not sure Crawford is going to be as good as Marsh, or say, Ben Revere. But they gotta find out. They probably need to trade Marsh if they are ready to bring up Crawford and can't unload Nick (unless they are ready to for-real platoon him). Marsh is a better LF than CF and so apparently is Crawford. So they really are redundant LHB OFs.

But none of the above really fixes what you call the mess. They need one surefire everyday big-hitting corner OF. But this is the minors thread, so I'll stop there.

Crawford is still filling out, and I'm sure they're working on swing adjustments to garner more power without sacrificing contact. Probably do FIL then head off to Zona to prepare him to push for a starting job in 2026. Still only 21, so no reason to rush him.

Reyes at 24 needs to be pushed more, find out if he's for real, and whether he can handle LF.
