It doesn't look like Doc Edwards had any extra-base hits in 1970. His SLG was .269, same as his BA.
To my young mind, nothing could go right for the 1970 Phillies. In a terrible move after the past season, they traded Dick Allen and others for Tim McCarver, Joe Hoerner, outfielder Byron Browne (I had assumed he was good because I had his baseball card from three years earlier, and it had a little trophy on it for being an outstanding rookie--Browne had hit 16 home runs his rookie year--and 14 for the rest of his career). The Phillies also received Curt Flood, sort of. We know how that worked out.
The two catchers on the roster, McCarver and Mike Ryan, got hurt ibn the same game; so they had to bring in Jim Hutto to catch. Fortunately, the Phillies were in San Francisco, and their AAA team was in the PCL; so they were able to get a catcher, Mike Compton, to San Francisco for the doubleheader the next day. They then called another catcher from AAA, Del Bates, whom I recall as being really bad. They finally cut Bates and activated Doc Edwards.
It wasn't as easy to get information on player moves back then, and I wondered why the Phillies didn't bring back Dave Watkins, who had served as backup to Ryan in 1969. Looking him up now, Watkins retired from baseball to go back to school to become a doctor. Docs abounded at the catcher position...
