Almost the same with the Ozzie Virgil one. Infield single and two errors loaded the bases. Virgil was the first one to hit it out of the infield (and the outfield).

I don't know who Mr Kepner is, but how can it be a "walk-off" home run when the Phils were the visiting team and it occurred in the top of the ninth? And there were even a couple of Phils who batted after Sosa.

When did we decide "go ahead" wasn't good enough any longer for our hype-it-to-the max society?

Here's hoping Harper hits a "walk-off homer" in the third today so we can keep our undefeated victory streak alive.

My mistake, his tweet came up in a search I did, it wasn't posted last night. Someone else somewhere posted about that one but I liked his cause it mentioned the baserunners!

The more recent tweets from others mention Virgil as the last Phils pinch hitter with a go ahead slam with 2 outs in the ninth.

Kepner grew up a Phillies fan and started a baseball magazine when he was a teen and got some attention for it back then.

One of those stories where they ask the kid if he wants to do that "when he grows up" and he says yes, but he actually did, worked for a couple papers out west, then the NY Times so now part of The Athletic. He loves those teams he grew up with. He's in his fifties now.

(He's a friend of a former co-worker, and we all sometimes interact on the social media so I picked his tweet without fact checking, oops)

I have seen people misuse walk off that way before, but agreed, he knows better. Ninth inning or just game-winning would be more precise.

Kepner was one of the few laid off NYT sports people who stayed on at Athletic.

Sarah Lang is also very reliable so i wonder if she made the same error or if he just got carried away.

Not really that important. Clearly he did a search on 9th inning and just used walkoff in the tweet. Just a human mistake.

Then it's still at least a little lazy as Harper, Victorino, Juan Samuel, etc have hit a go-ahead grand slam in the 9th it since 1983.

If he meant go-ahead, pinch-hit grand slam, then he missed both of those things in the tweet as well.

Ah! Yes, totally on you. In August of 2019, the night of that tweet, Harper hit a walk-off GS that was the first since '83.

And the weird thing, if you read the replies to that tweet, is that same 1983 season is when Diaz hit the one that just came up as being part of the Phillies' largest 9th-inning comeback before Sunday.

Stepping back, the Cardinals comeback was probably better. 4-0 down instead of 3-1. This had the added element of a HR being taken away 2 batters before the Sosa HR.

And yes I am still watching after midnight so the hate of West Coast time zones is part of it. They were both awesome and I don't really care about whatever someone did 40 years ago was better.

I remember Jim Hutto. He was a utility guy for the 1970 Phillies, when I was 11. I was old enough to follow the Phillies closely and kind of understand what was going on, and too young to have time to do much else. Hutto fit right in with that team, which had a lot of guys who couldn’t hit. He got into some games behind the plate because the team’s catchers were dropping like flies (and in some cases, dropping flies). At one point, if I remember correctly, the only active catcher with major league experience was a coach whom they activated.

So I was prepared early to be able to endure some bad baseball from the Phillies over the years.
