It was interesting watching Strasburg v Pivetta.
Pivetta's stuff is in the same class as Strasburg, 95 t97, slider, curve, changeup.
The difference was command, especially secondary pitches.
Pivetta got too many FBs out over the plate, his curve broke too low or was outside, his change was erratic, his slider had a sharp break but couldn't be thrown for strikes.
Strasburg relied on his FB but also a "Slider" which I think is really a cutter, 90-91 that he painted the outside corner.
Strasburg also had the experience to work through an off outing.
And of course, the Nat lineup is murder.
Pivetta needs a full year at AAA to refine his stuff, so does Velasquez for that matter.
Eflin is ahead of these guys when it comes to FB command, but still needs work on his secondary pitches.
As they get deeper in pitching depth, I think you'll see guys like Kilome, Medina and Sanchez brought along slower for that reason.
It's hard to work on refining your pitches when every mistake ends up 400 feet away.
