Mark Leiter (Sr.) almost won both games of that doubleheader. Both games went 12 innings. In game one, Leiter pitched scoreless 10th and 11th innings. Rico Brogna pinch-hit for him in the bottom of the 11th and lined out to CF with runners at 1st and 3rd. Scott Rolen walked it off in the 12th with a home run. In game two, the Marlins scored a run in the top of the 12th off Leiter on an infield single by former Phillie Todd Zeile. In the bottom half, Ruben Amaro Jr. led off with a homer, then single, sac bunt, intentional walk to Rolen, and this time Brogna delivered with a single to CF. Both teams scored in the 10th, 11th, and 12th (without ghost runners!).
The sweep put the Phillies five games over .500, but sadly, they went 22-39 the rest of the way. But nearly 28 years later, that manager is in first place.
