Velasquez is the poster child for why velocity is overrated.
Command is more important, but harder to measure and project.
Velasquez is not going to be better than a #5 starter until he commands that FB and develops two consistent secondary pitches.
It's a good fastball, not just velocity (Morgan throws almost as hard) but it's hard to pick up, lot's of swings and misses.
But it's not good enough to get away with walks and 3-1 counts on a consistent basis.
Thing is this season is lost anyway, so the real key is giving him 30 starts, building up his stamina and hopefully his mechanics smooth out and he develops better command.
He's probably 1-2 minor league seasons of 26 starts behind his peers and needs the experience he should have gotten in AAA ball (where his mistakes wouldn't travel as far).
