I mean, you are both correct. I tend to go even further than Legodoom, I don't think there are many elite, 1% of 1% pro athletes who are capable of being normal human beings and not narcissists. Obviously that's not really true, there are plenty of good people, and plenty who learn to become good people the hard way, and plenty who are just a little weird and obsessed and broken without being terrible people (our current 1B and QB might both fit into that category, while Joel might not be weird and obsessed and broken enough). But when I think of Rose, Kobe, MJ, I can't separate the character flaws from what drove them as players.

Doesn't sound like the cops were too hard on him if he got to follow them back driving his own car and made bail that night. No wonder the UGA players just keep doing it.

I don't think it's ridiculous to hold athletes to a higher standard though. They are part of a public relationship with a city and (despite what Barkley said) are role models. High school and college football sells itself as something that makes better human beings, that's why people hold them to a higher standard. So sure, it's ridiculous only because the whole thing is.

think that is true of elites at any endeavor as well.it takes a certain ego to work hard, beat other people and desire to win. Yu can’t statistically prove clutch, but watch Olympic ice skating and see performers who an handle pressure and melt under pressure. Risk takers often excel.

BTW, the part of the human brain that perceives risks and understands consequences doesnt fully develop until the mid twenties. It’s one of the reasons the Supreme Court ours eliminated the death penalty and life sentences for juveniles. I’m not justifying, just explaining, which are two different things.

Ojomo is gone for sure now, and he’s actually been better by statistical measures. Of course, Carter faces way more double teams. I’m not saying Carter is bad, just that his salary prevents them from going in many other directions. I guess they are betting he’s even better than he was in 2024. We will see.

Jalen Carter is nearly unblockable when healthy and plays a crazy amount of snaps. You keep him and Davis and then whoever plays next to them is going to look good.

I am interpreting the contract extension as follows

2026 - Plays under 4th year of Rookie Deal
2027 - Plays under the 5th year option
2028-2031 The actual extension

He gets a signing bonus now for some extra 2026 cash. And I suspect the 5th year option is included in the amount of guaranteed money. Rosenhaus can promote as just the 4 year extension with the higher AAV. I also suspect that the last year is completely non-guaranteed.

Health is the issue, in my opinion. The fact that he had to have stem cell treatment on his shoulders at this early stage of his career tells me that it's going to linger for quite some time. I sure hope his younger age will help, but I'm very concerned about it.

Are you sure he had stem cell treatments? You have to leave the country for that and typically go to Colombia. Dickerson and Jurgens did go to Colombia.

I'm with you, PC, on this. I would have let this entire season play out or at least done the extension after seeing some performance this season after his injury-riddled one last season. We'll see how it goes.

I disagree. Wentz was the first large mistake, but Roseman was able to work his way out of it. Drafting Hurts turned out to be a great decision and allowed the investment in the OL, WR, RB & D that helped bring us a SB trip in 2022 and our 2nd SB ring in 2024.

Roseman has made other costly mistakes: signing Huff, picking up Jeffries' last season, drafting Reagor etc., but the saving grace is his ability to admit them, work to minimize the damage and then invest to rectify the resulting hole in the roster.

Obviously Wentz wasn't a good signing, but it's hard to say it was too bad as he was able to be traded fairly easily.

The Carter extension was likely done this off-season because of the ability to spread out the cap structure. Waiting until after the season likely doesn't accomplish much unless you are fine letting his contract play out if he doesn't have a great season.

There is no first Super Bowl win without Wentz’s MVP-level regular season prior to injury. I have a hard time viewing that as a mistake. And his trade compensation was decent.

I know the offense was big in 2024, but is there a SB without Jalen? If you are for a Wentz extension, then being against Jalen doesn't make a lot of sense.

I think a few of us read VFK's comment that Howie's big mistake was Wentz to mean his extension, not drafting him in the first place. Because I don't think anyone can really argue taking him in the first place was wrong (as you obviously also believe). Even if, in hindsight, they misread his character. And then did so again (while misreading the Wentz/Doug relationship even more).

But all these deals are just part of the NFL's byzantine contract structures and Howie almost always seems to wriggle out when he wants to.
