You were arguing both sides - two different arguments really - too! I certainly agree that Buffalo is more attractive than Oakland or Cleveland. It's kind of moot really because there aren't actually any elite HC candidates on the market who would only take the best possible job (besides Harbaugh and McDermott and, um, Pete Carroll or Bill Belichick, lol?). And anyone who might be the Eagles OC isn't one either. Stefanski already got hired for a so-so job, and McDaniel probably will too. Maybe he goes to Buffalo but he was probably going somewhere.
But the one thing the Bills opening does change is Daboll's prospects. They are probably the only one of the other 31 teams who might hire him to be HC. But I don't see that as a great team hiring the best possible guy, that's more about the history.
It's funny to look back on the Eagles hiring process. Did the team reject everyone they interviewed or did some of the interviewees decide it wasn't for them? If memory serves they were supposedly trending towards (Josh) McDaniels and Nick beat him out.
Several of those names, though certainly not all, were probably Rooney Rule.
The Eagles held an extensive search after firing Super Bowl-winning coach Doug Pederson on Jan. 11. They interviewed Arthur Smith, Robert Saleh, Jerod Mayo, Joe Brady, Kellen Moore, Duce Staley, Todd Bowles, Dennis Allen, McDaniels and Sirianni. They also had a request in to speak with Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, sources said, but there was an agreement to wait until after Sunday's AFC Championship Game for a potential interview.
