My husband and I went to Wrestlemana 3 in Atlantic City and saw the Hulk - Andre the Giant match. We brought my daughter back a Hulk plushie toy. Those were the banner days of professional wrestling, when one could cheery for the good guys and boo the bad guys, knowing it was just fun entertainment. It was new to me, being a west coaster. Even my daughter was a fan as a kid, we went to some live events in Scranton. I haven’t watched it in years.

Ironically, as lopsided as that trade was, DeJesus played in more WS games for the Phillies (5) than Sandberg played in for the Cubs (0) and only in one less Postseason game (10 for Sandberg, 9 for DeJesus).

Turned out to be not a very good manager but he had the character to recognize that and walk away.

Yet none of them played in a single WS game for the Cubs. I was up in Cooperstown for Dick Allen's induction this past weekend. Fergie Jenkins was up there. He looks and sounds at least 20 years younger than his 85 years of age.

The Phillies didn't give up much to the Cubs for Manny Trillo (plus Greg Gross). And a couple of weeks after trading Alexander to the Cubs, they traded 36 year old Dode Paskert to them for Cy Williams, who played 13 years for the Phillies and led the league in homers three times.

But the Phillies' trade record with the Astros is rally good. They stole Curt Schilling and Bobby Abreu. Bourn for Lidge worked out quite well. And the Phillies didn't end up giving up much for Hunter Pence as it turns out.

(Ironically, they then got nothing back when they traded Schilling, Abreu, and Pence.)

Grimsley ended up having a 15 year ML career, mostly as a reliever, so he was not chopped liver though he did turn out to be a steroid user. And, he had no success with the Astros, interestingly. And, while Padilla was no Schilling, he gave us an All-Star season, so I wouldn't say he was chopped liver either. He too had a long ML career--14 years--though he never came close to matching his early Phillies success. And, the Phillies roughed him up in the clinching Game 5 of the 2009 NLCS. Yes, if the Phillies kept humming along through the 2010's and kept Pence and the Astros clung to those four guys as building blocks, the trade would have ended up being a laugher for the Phillies.

And really Travis Lee and Omar Daal weren't nothing either, it was just dubious of them to want major leaguers. 2001 team won 86 games but was nowhere near the wild card still.

Wade was feeling the heat and needed quick results. That 2001 season saved his job and gave him another four years just as 1993 saved Lee Thomas's job and gave him another four years. In fairness to Wade--who gets honored this weekend--he was actually a good builder GM, he just couldn't finish, in contrast with Thomas who couldn't build but was a great finisher. If we could have had a GM with Wade's builder qualities and Thomas's finisher qualities, we probably would have had a HOF GM.
