He was fun to watch in 1983 for that year's NL Champion Phillies. But, in 1984, he showed up for ST fairly obviously overweight (even as a fifteen-year-old kid, I could see it with the eye test) and that seemed to affect his effectiveness on the mound. His reacted to criticisms about his weight with defiance and the Phillies dealt him in early 1985 to the Pirates for Kent Tekulve. He was implicated in the MLB cocaine scandal in the mid-1980s and I had heard that was another "concern" that the Phillies developed about him. Giles had a zero tolerance policy for that stuff which was why guys like Lonnie Smith (proven cocaine user) and Gary Matthews (rumored cocaine user, he vigorously denies) were shipped out of town. But, as I said, he was a valuable member of the '83 Phillies.
