I considered Abreu, but in putting together a team, I wanted a RH hitting outfielder for the bench, I didn't want both of my reserve OF to hit LH, so to me it was Ashburn's 1958 season vs. Abreu's 2004, and the reason I went with Ashburn is defense. Ashburn could probably have played any spot in the outfield, while Abreu could never play CF and was a below average defensive player (despite the ridiculous gold glove he won in 2005). As for Burrell, his 2002 season was close, but Luzinski's 1977 season was better, defensively, probably a wash. As for Burrell vs. Ennis, I never saw Ennis play, but I suspect he was a better defensive OF.
Boone was certainly the best defensive catcher, but never had an offensive season close to 1999 Leiberthal. Similar situation with Maddox, incredible defensive player, but never had came close to a season like 1993 Dykstra. Dykstra was no slouch in the OF either. I did have a little hesitation choosing Dykstra's 1993 season as it is a bit tainted.
Also, for Schmidt, I was tempted to go with his 1981 season, which if the season was not strike shortened, his numbers project to be his career best.
For the rotation, 5th starter was the hardest. Schilling's 1997 season was close but I went with Short because the 1964 Phillies were playing for something, and 1997 Phillies were not. I also considered Bunning's 1964 & 1965 seasons, but Short's 1964 ERA of 2.20 was nearly a half run better. Bunning does have better IP and SO number though.
