Back in the fall of 2007, I decided to purchase a server to replace the collection of servers in the basement that was running the business, as well as this forum. I also decided to co-locate it with a hosting provider (in Lansing, about an hour's drive) to take advantage of their network and uptime.
This server was beefy (for the time): two 4-core 1.6 Ghz Xeon CPUs, 8GB RAM, and 1TB of hard drive space (in a RAID5 configuration). It handled all of the load I could throw at it without breaking a sweat. It ran with very little maintenance: IIRC, I "visited" it twice (once to replace a failed hard drive, once to replace the battery on the RAID controller).
After I shut down the business, I began to migrate various services elsewhere. Most of them (including this forum) now reside on a VPS (a virtual server), that is both cheaper and maintenance-free. Recently, the hosting provider returned the old server to me, and I'm planning to continue to use it at my house for various hobby projects. Still, I figured it appropriate to give it a send-off here.
Thanks to socrates.mvpsoft.com for over nine trouble-free years. Well done, good and faithful server.
