Ah, makes sense. So you can't really do DFA trades in August either, they just go straight to waivers.

More here (guessing he does not get his own thread). This year is actually his last option so this was a 40-man need space move by the Tigers. Looks like his stuff was a bit better prior to the pandemic. Then more average after that.

Strange that they gave up on adding more bullpen arms with so many better arms being moved than what they have filling out the roster.

They actually don’t have a ton of regular season roster room, especially come mid August. You will have Duran, Kerkering, Strahm, Alvarado, Banks, and Robertson. That leaves two spots that are likely low leverage and multi inning for Romano, Ross, Lazar, Walker (when Nola is back), Robert, and Johnson. In the postseason Suarez and/or Luzardo move into the Alvarado spot. Not sure how much you want to give up to probably not make a big (if any) upgrade on Banks. You aren’t giving up much to have a guy really be your long man when losing.

Yeah I don't know that they needed to give up more prospects for a #6 or even #5 reliever, while also paying their prorated salary at 110%. And if they were interested in offloading Romano or Ross it didn't happen. There are three high-end relievers joining the roster in August, with one of them giving way to a starter in October.
