Not a huge overpay for Rogers, you are just overvaluing those Mets prospects. For those that watch the system those are arrow down guys more in the 11-20 range, plus an MLB reliever who is probably not someone you want in the postseason. It isn't nothing, but they are names more than big prospects.

For 2025, Rogers' impact is pretty close to what you might expect from Duran. Duran with the controllable years will obviously cost more. It would have been a nice move for the Phils, but they probably don't have the guys in the 10 to 20 range to match what the Mets gave them, and you're not giving up one of our top guys for this type of rental.

This is where that chasm after prospect #6 is really hurting the Phils.

But in practice you are platooning Marsh and Harper in LF and Bohm and Harper at 1B. It just happens to be the case that Marsh doesn't play when Bohm plays 1B.

And why not just play Schwarber in LF against LHP, leave our best 1B at 1B, and have Bohm DH?

The RHB in a platoon just plays so infrequently that you may as well trade Bohm for almost anything [and you'd also get some salary relief].

No, in practice, in the lineup, Harper is always in the lineup and the platoon is Marsh and Bohm. It’s not that hard to understand.

If you prefer Schwaber in left, Harper at first, and Bohm at DH vs lefties vs. Harper in left, Bohm at first, and Schwarber at DH that’s fine. It’s still a Marsh/Bohm platoon.

And your point about righties playing so infrequently makes no sense. If that were the case then why wouldn’t teams just play 9 lefties all the time? IMO, platoons are a vastly underutilized option. And, while Bohm and a a very poor regular, he is a useful platoon option - and the Phils should clearly not be playing Marsh against lefties, which your argument implies they should do.

Now, if you can get something for Bohm and use Kemp in the platoon instead, I’m all for it. I’m just skeptical that he’d fetch anything of value since he clearly only has value as the weak side of a platoon.

I just don't think anybody ever uses the term platoon to refer to the batting order rather than a shared position in the field.

Certainly, it is curious that teams don't platoon more, but that is usually because they aren't willing to bench guys like Bohm or Casty. The Phillies have been very willing to sit Stott and Marsh and Kepler because playing 75% of the time is still starting, even if Kepler complained about it.

I don't know why you're saying the Phillies shouldn't play Marsh against lefties when he rarely does.

Doubt they are done. They'll keep looking for a RHB though the pickings were always slim. If they bring up Crawford maybe Kemp is fine. Suarez seems a longshot [and would really add to the depletion]. Kepler might still have a trade taker.

I do also wonder if they might be able to unload Romano. I mean, look at what Soto had been traded for two years in a row. He can also still help the Phillies, I believe, but is probably too far down the leverage chart to be counted on in October.

He was probably getting three years with a 4th year option at minimum. No way anything less keeps him here unless it is crazy AAV. It's not like you can't trade for other catchers or sign a free agent or even pick up someone else's prospect.

I’m not a huge fan of Helsley, but that’s a significantly lower price that makes me a little jealous. But I’d trust Duran more in a big spot.

Helsley is a free agent after this year. Duran is under Phillies control through 2027.

Again, this is probably where that huge drop off after the top six hurts them. Nobody is going to bite on Mendez, Nori, etc. compared to many other clubs offers of 2nd tier prospects. So the Phil's had to move their top tier - and made sure they got years of control and not just rentals with them.

Definitely a much lower price but Helsley, IMO, is worth much less. I wouldn't really trust him to get big outs THIS year and certainly don't see him providing a ton of value the next two.

If they were going to make a move, I prefer the bigger swing on Duran than nibbling around the edges with a guy like Helsley who may not be much better than what they already have.
