That's fine. I don't want Stanton. I put him in the mix just so Miami gets to dump more $. If they'd rather keep him, they are more than welcome to keep him and the deal can be around Yellich/Gordon. If they want our core prospects in that deal, I'm perfectly happy passing. And no, I would not both take on Stanton's contract and give up core prospects. That is lose-lose for us. Why give Moniak or Kingery for the privilege of over-paying Stanton? His next two seasons are pretty much useless to us from the standpoint of making the playoffs. Miami has to decide what they want: a pile of top prospects or salary relief plus eyewash. If they want both, then I sincerely hope the Phillies aren't stupid enough to oblige them.

CSNPhillies is reporting now that Nick Cafardo wrote today in the Boston Globe that Phillie-Marlin talks in regard to Yelich are "heating up" and would seem to re-affirm my guess that the Phils are prepared to take Gordon as a way to financially facilitate the deal.

Personally, I don't believe Kingery is even mentioned in this deal, I believe it would be Hernandez. The Marlins have to at least look like they are getting back some recognizable talent and Caesar Hernandez is not only recognizable, but talented, young and affordable.

One more thing worth noting. The Marlins are rounding 3rd base in their efforts to sell the team and I am hoping that the Phils recognize this and take advantage of this since it has been reported that before the Marlin sale can be completed they must shed some salary.

By the way, Gordon is not the player drawing interest from 10 teams, one of their relievers is. Right now its being reported that the Blue Jays and Phillies are interested in Gordon.

This thread is so long today I assumed there was an actually trade.

Still a full two weeks to go. There are gonna be trades. The difference between this year and last year is last year there were zero players on the roster who could be lost for nothing (except Bourjos, and other people nobody wanted). Hellickson had the QO and even Chooch had a team option.

They will trade those guys. If you want to argue they should move fast and then work on bigger deals, fine. But you could also argue that if Klentak has multiple bigger irons in the fire it's fine to focus on that, trading Neshek and Nava will be relatively simple and if they end taking the second-best deal because they were busy (successfully) getting Christian Yelich, who cares?

But it might also make sense to get the 4 or 5 bodies you are going to get for the vets right now, in case you want to flip one of them in a bigger deal (or just have a better picture of your depth before you send young players to the Marlins).

The Dee Gordon thing seems like nothing, it's either a puffed-up rumor or the Phillies have no intention of keeping him. They could use him until next deadline (Kingery is probably not coming up before Super Two cut-off anyway), or not.

I don't get the Yelich interest. Don't we have a good shot at our own "Yelich" with either Herrera or Altherr? I mean he's a nice player, but I'd prefer a power bat if they are going to add an established OF. Unless he came cheap (he won't), I don't know why we would trade a bunch of prospects for him.

With Pineda going down on the Yankees, Helickson would sure seem like a good fit for them. Add TJ to a package so he can play 1B for them this year and DH next year when Bird comes back and Holliday is gone. I would think that package could get you one decent prospect (their 10-15 range?) and a lottery ticket.

Hellickson would seem to fit with the Nats, too now that Ross went down.

Neshak will go somewhere - I would think it will happen pretty soon now after the A's / Nats trade.

I hope some deals get made soon. I'd hate to end up with all of these guys once the music stops!

Hags...Yelich is a very good player with a great contract and the Phils have liked him for years now. My gosh, their last two #1 draft picks were supposedly comps to Yelich. Also, Gordon would not be a bad short term player for the Phils, a place holder till Kingery is ready.

This would add two solid left handed hitters to the Phils lineup, give them a decent lead off and #3 hitter, both with speed and would allow the Phils to use what might become a team strength [outfield depth] to deal for a pitcher or two.

Honestly, this seems the kind of deal that the Phils have almost never made and the kind of trade that GM's like Epstein and Cashman routinely make...taking on cash to get the player they truly want.

Now its true that we won't be able to judge this potential deal till we know who we gave up but I applaud the Phils for trying if they indeed are. One thing worth watching for tonight...does Gordon play? He did not start yesterday for the first time in quite awhile and if the Marlins are close to moving him it might behoove them not to use him. Hernandez, on the other hand, needs to play to show he is healthy if he is a potential trade candidate.

If, in order to obtain Yelich, the Phillies have to take on a contract, my preference would be Stanton over Gordon. Two reasons:(1) Stanton has never been busted for PEDs and (2) Gordon plays a position where he gets in the way of others in the system.
Sure Stanton has a huge contract and has had some injury issues but he can strengthen a lineup as few can in the game. There is no guarantee that the Phillies will outbid other organizations for Harper or Machado and ever get Trout out of SoCal. Even if they did nab one from this trio, the money and term that it will cost them most likely will be more than Stanton has coming to him. All of these guys will have dead years at the end of their deals. It's the cost of doing business today and why some organizations can't do these things. If Stanton is out there to be had, the Phils should grab him.
What should the Phillies give up in order to get these two? IMO, nothing that isn't easily replaceable from the system.

The point of Gordon is that he's disposable. You could acquire him and cut him tomorrow. Stanton's not.

I'm not opposed to Stanton, mind you. But remember, the original, three-source (if still anonymous) Rosenthal report specifically said the Phillies weren't interested in Stanton, that part was projection/speculation.

I think it's still going to be tough for the Phillies to beat out another team for one of these guys, unless they are the only team willing to take on 100% of Stanton's contract.

The assumption that the Phillies get any of the big three - Harper, Machado or Trout - assumes that they would not be out bid by the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers or the Field when they are at FA. Most likely is Trout because of his hometown ties, but that's not until 2020 and no certainty he leaves the Angels since they've managed to contend out of nowhere. Even if they can sign them $40m is a lot more than $25m AAV against the luxury tax or the $29m in cash owing in the out years of Stantons contract. That's a lot of issues and uncertainties to pass on stanton now even with the contract.

Machado has a 98 OPS+ at the moment so he's not exactly free of risk either.

i think stanton's contract wouldn't be too bad for the last 2/3 years. howard's turned out pretty bad, but injuries hurt that. i also think the phils are more equipped to add youngsters from the farm when stanton gets older. the phils didn't have anyone to come up and support howard when he was fading. i'd might be inclined to give it a shot as long as the price (in players) isn't too high.

Add Altherr. He can play center very well. And his stats this year are comparable to Yelich in proportion to playing time.
So Yes, I see us quite deep in the CF position.

I don't know if Yelich is an exact match in terms of skillset for anybody else we have, majors and minors. Haseley is probably the closest in that he is a tweener (mediocre CF defense, good in a corner) though I think they hope Haseley will grow into more power than Yelich. Moniak is more of a true centerfielder with better speed but he has much less control of the strike zone than Yelich.

Herrera, Quinn, and Tocci are all completely different players than Yelich. If one wants a high OBP fixture in the lineup (perhaps paired 2-3 with Crawford) then Yelich is a really attractive piece.

Agree with those who say he is not really needed though. If he were an add-on to a contending team it would make more sense but at this point I'd rather see how our prospects progress through next year before adding someone immediately if that someone would cost us top tier prospects.
