They can pick up some veteran arms in FA, but the solution is simply patience (and maybe a better pitching coach).
You stockpile lots of young arms (which Klentak has done) then hope a few emerge.
Give me Nola and four other pitchers like Eickhoff last year (hopefully he can regain his velocity and bounce back next year) and this is a .500+ team, especially with Herrera and Altherr back.
It's nice to dream about 5 #1/#2 starters, but in reality, as we've seen, it's darn hard to find 5 #4/#5 starters, this season (as did the 2000s) show the value of guys who can throw 180-200 innings with a 4.00-4.50 ERA/FIP.
When you have a team that can pound like this team is going to in the future, you just need a decent starting group and a solid bullpen (see 2008).
They're going to go into ST next year with 8 young pitchers with ML starting experience (Nola, Eickhoff, Velasquez, Pivetta, Eflin, Thompson, Leiter, Lively) plus Anderson, Eshelman and Tavares.
Same in the bullpen, with Ramos, Milner, Rios, Pinto, Therrien.
A lot of young pitchers need two to three shots before they settle in, so having so many young arms on the verge is a long-term plus, even if it means short-term pain for Phans.
