Day 1: Cal St. Fullerton (Seabold!) vs. Oregon St; LSU vs. Florida St. (Nieporte!)

Not going to do a full game thread here, but I'll try to report on how Seabold fares...

CSF scored three in the top of the first, on a three-run home run by...somebody.

Seabold got through the first without giving up any runs - but the Ducks loaded the bases, and Seabold flirted with walking in a run. Long inning, but no damage.

Initial impression...Seabold is average. I honestly don't know if he has MLB stuff.

My initial impression: lots of hair.

He's working at 91-93 mph with a lot of fastballs. Don't see a true put-away breaking ball, split, etc., at least not yet.

Let's remember he is facing the #1 team in the country, too.

Oregon St. infielder Madrigal is a potential 2018 1st rounder.

Fullerton has knocked Oregon State's starter, Jake Thompson, out of the game in the fourth inning. It's 5-1 Fullerton, with two away in the fourth, Fullerton still batting.

I'd say it's more 90-92 t93, but his FB has a lot of movement and his motion seems to be deceptive.
He's maintained that velocity through 60 pitches, so it's not a one inning deal.
His split finger is bad, so is his slider.
His control is good, his command not so much, but you have to take into account nerves as well.
Seabold's 6'3 190 at age 21 so figure he fills out another 10 lbs the next few years and adds a tick of velocity, say 91-93 t95 as his upside.
They'll probably work on his mechanics, teach him a two seamer and sharpen his secondary stuff.
If he's comfortable with the split, probably make it his "changeup."

But you can see why they drafted him, all FBs against maybe the best hitting college team in the country and they're struggling to make good contact.

4th inning, 70+ pitches.
Velocity dropped to 88-91, started missing badly with some pitches.
However, showed a much better slider with a sharp break.
I think the adrenalin started wearing off, probably won't go more than 5 innings due to a high pitch count (we hope!).

They say he throws all 4 seamers, but I'm wondering, he threw a "Nola special" for a third strike, FB about a foot off the plate that tailed right over the outside corner, knee high, for strike 3 at 91 MPH. That sure moved like a 2 seamer.

Started yanking pitches, obvious fatigue, trying to maintain velocity.
Hung in there and still has a 5-1 lead.

Seabold is through 5 innings now, near the 100-pitch mark. He is holding the 5-1 lead. He has stranded 8 Oregon State baserunners, working in & out of trouble.

Seabold's velocity is now down 2-3 mph from its peak early in the game, mostly 88-90 t91 now on the fastball. His pitches have movement and he's mixing in a little more offspeed, so he's keeping enough hitters off the barrel to survive.

I hope they take him out now.

Seabold was pulled after 5 innings and 97 pitches. He leaves with a final line: 5 ip 6 h 1 r/er 1 bb 2 k, 1 hbp

Against the best team in the NCAA that's a nice start. Glad they pulled him reasonably early.

Not much bat-missing stuff though. The velocity is OK though suspect he is a guy that sits 90-91 in the pros on regular rest. The fastball did have movement at least.

Seabold kept Oregon State in check for five innings. The Fullerton bullpen...did not. Final was 6-5 Oregon State. Fullerton goes into the loser's bracket, plays the loser of tonight's LSU-Florida State game, on Monday afternoon.

In the nightcap, Florida State is leading LSU 3-1, in the top of the 3rd. Quincy Nieporte (our 26th round pick) is the FSU DH, batting 4th. They're pronouncing Quincy's name as "ne-POR-tee."

UPDATE: LSU came from behind to win the second game. Cal State Fullerton and Florida State will sqaure off at 2 pm on Monday, in the first loser's bracket game. One of them will advance; one will be going home. Either way, one of our draftees will become available to sign.

Day 2 of the CWS: Louisville (Colby Fitch, Rd. 13) defeated Texas A&M 8-4, in the first game. Colby Fitch drove in four of Louisville's 8 runs.

Florida (Dalton Guthrie, Rd. 6) playing TCU in the nightcap. Florida is up 1-0, in the second inning.

Louisville plays in the second round on Tuesday evening. If Florida wins tonight, they play Louisville; if they lose, they play A&M Tuesday afternoon in the elimination bracket.

Florida defeated TCU 3-0, so:

Monday, 2 pm - Fullerton vs. Florida State. One goes on, one goes home.
Tuesday, 7 pm - Louisville vs. Florida. Winner goes on, loser goes to elimination game against winner of A&M/TCU game (Tuesday afternoon)

Florida RHP Brady Singer is the scheduled starter for the Gators tonight. He's a soph and considered a high 1st rounder next year. He went 1st overall in one way too early mock I saw, to you know who.
